Post by: Cupra Turbo on 18 December 2003, 23:27
Yes even u VR6 owners are gonna be in the rear view mirror of Renaults new beasts

I'd love to have a go in one... evryone raves about them. One of the most popular new cars taken on track days now.

They are the new GTI's arent they.

... :'(

VW makes em too heavy and adds a turbo to pretend its fast... when in reality its just a big oaf station wagon!

... well... mk4 anywayz LOL!

Post by: golfvr6 on 18 December 2003, 23:58
If the mk4 turbo is slow, then what does that make your 8v?  :-*
Title: Re:Our Golf's are getting OLD and SLOW
Post by: Cupra Turbo on 19 December 2003, 00:03
It makes me 19 with no ncb.

and I was 18 when I bought it.

What does it make you?  ???

I plan on having a 172 early 2005 or perhaps a 206 180bhp.

by then I "should" be on ?18,000 a year, 21yrs young and 1yr ncb.

... I plan things in advance!  8)

PS: My 8v doesnt look as "family wagon" as a mk4 turbo.

I mean, coloured bump strips, alloys and different rear lenses ...???

Yes even u VR6 owners are gonna be in the rear view mirror of Renaults new beasts

Renault Clio Sport 182
Clio Sport V6 255Bhp

Can't speak for everyone, but I disagree with this!
Firstly, my golf is far from slow!
Secondly, I couldn't contemplate swapping a VW for a french car.
I have put 47k miles on my golf in well under 18 months and it hasn't missed a beat.
A girlfriend of my missus picked up her brand new 172 sport (one of the last left in the country apparently) and it was back in the garage getting fixed within three days.
French cars are fast because they are poorly built (and hence, lightweight) - eletrics, interiors, body panels, everything is all tier three quality compared to our vee dubs.

You want one for christmas? I garauntee you that by easter the only quick thing about it will be the speed at which the trim falls around your feet, and the frequency of the calls you need to make to the dealer to complain.  ;D

Drove the 180Bhp anniversary - boring...no fun... not frighteningly fast either
Drove the 4Motion, hella fast... but bland... nice exhaust tho.
Drove the R32 ... too jiggery in first gear ... hence the new R32 DSG.

I don't see where mine has gotten any slower with age. The french car may show it the heels in a straight line run but how does it handle? I had a ren 19 16v for a little while. That thing was quick but my mk2 valver is just as quick if not quicker and handles a world better. I did drive a new clio 172 a couple months back just for grins and it was a fast little sh1t but i don't see it pulling away from a mk3 VR6. VR6 is a torque beast and handles the revs better then the the french cars do. Keep the revs up and hit your shifts proper and no problems there. :) Be a fun race though. R32 is quite the car. Is your sis single ;)  ;D I know a really nice bloke she could meet.  ;D

2 now.. did have 3.

They currently have a Black one and a Blue one... Blue one is a demo...

The way it works is, most retailers got ONE R32 to sell... but a garage in Carlisle wanted a 180Bhp Mk4 Anniversary for a customer and my local VW had one, so they basically just gave them the anniversary in a trade for the black R32.

... Its a little bit more complicated than that... but its the jist.

... dunno where the third one came from tho... probably another trade or summet.

They also have a nice 150Bhp TDI PD Anniversary for sale... ?17,000 i think its selling at... heh heh.. one year old too

Theres plenty of old Jap cars about... My second car is a F plate Honda Integra with 270,000 miles on the clock. I also own an F Reg Nissan Micra and a J plate Nissan 100Nx.

I wasn't cussing Jap cars, just pointing out theres 100s or even much more old golfs around compared with jap cars.
Pre 90 jap cars are very rare compared to golfs, i think that says it all. Jap make great engines, but the old bodyworks didn't hold up for long.
Its all down to individual taste really. I think 5k for a vr6 is a bargain.
On the subject of value for money, i couldn't think of a single reason to go and spend 25-30k on a jap sports car when i could buy a super fast Audi for that money.
I think some people are just out to knock the vr6, is it jealousy by any chance?  :o

I would still perfer the GOLF mk3 vr6 then a Nissan Sunny GTi-R as they are such a nice car and i will purchase sooner or later. The golf mk3 looks loads better than a nissan sunny GTI, don't get me wrong they are fast but the GOLF vr6 is still at the top of my list.  ;D

There is a reason to spend 25-30k on a jap car when you could have a super fast audi for the same cash

the reason being impreza/evo 6

not much will out perform these cars on britains varying roads..

sorry but its true,  watch a few rallies WRC or even group N... ;)

Alright then mate, if we are going to talk about cars we CAN'T afford then i'll go for an AUDI RS6. 4.2L V8 BI-TURBO, where are your jap cars now?

Thats the difference for me, whats the point of buying a performance car thats gonna lose all its value and fall apart?

Are you sure about that?
Have you ever driven any Audi quattros before?
i have to admit i haven't driven an impreza , however the audi sticks to the road like its on railway tracks.
You can go round a roundabout with your foot to floor, no loss of grip at all.
I have driven a 90 quattro and an A4 quattro, the handling is absolutely AMAZING, out of this world.

I agree in the early eighties not much could beat the Audi Quattro E2 (500bhp)

However, not having driven any early or late Quattro, or Impreza, or Mitsi Evo,

I couldn't tell you which is quickest, etc.

But (don't believe everything you read) many many many people would say that its hard to beat a Evo 6 straight from the forecourt...

The jap cars are very cheap as well as very quick. They depreciate like a breeze block in a river. You need to ask yourself why?

Im sure Subaru's came from up there...

cos back in the 80's or summet they came to the UK and had no car dealerships etc... and .... the "whole thing was a f*cking disgrace" (Billy Connelly Impression)

Depreciate ?? No more so than any other countries car.. Look at the Honda Civic CRX and the Nissan 100Nx... They hold probably the highest values for there age (relative to original purchase price).

I think you'll find Subaru is a Fuji owned company. So its Japanese.

Maybe you have a point there danhock, however the majority of these performance jap car DO depreciate very fast, much quicker than a lot of vws.
You get what you pay for in this world, you can get a new impreza, for example, relatively cheap for the performance it produces. Ask yourself, why so cheap? answer - because it won't last.
If you like jap cars so much then why don't you go and buy one.

I know the feeling! My Brother had an 88 GSXR1100 one of the old hypersport jobs. What a beast! One of my old riding partners had a ZX-12 with an extended swingarm. Rode like a dream it did. Smoothed all the chop out of it and kept the front wheel planted. The last bike I had was a 99 R1. That thing was fun. I weigh about 175 and had a hell of a time kepping the front wheel down through 3rd if I was on it hard. I wound up downing it through a roundabout and called it quits on bikes for a bit. I was going straight on through the roundabout at about 55 and a land rover pulled out in front of me. I had no choice but to either hit the land rover or go straight over the hump in the middle of the round about. not a good move at 55. Took to the air and when I landed it got into a bar slapper that i couldn't get back out of. walked away from it sore but in one piece but never saw anything of the car driver. Another bloke in a car behind me chased him down and got his reg number for me though. The Ducati was a fun bike. Handled quick like a dirt bike and had loads of low end torque. a bit lean on topend compared to the modern bikes but did all i wanted. After having that twin cylinder I think I would be after an SP2 if I went out to buy a new bike today. Thinking about getting a big trailie though ;D
