I replaced the rubber carb mounting thing at the weekend as it was totally perished and causing rough and slow idling. I drove it briefly at the weekend and it seemed ok but this morning I have an hot idle speed of 2200 rpm. It isn't rough, it just idles at a rock steady 2200.
I'm guessing at an airlock in the cooling system around the carb, any other ideas?

either that or the coolant channel o'ring in the inlet manifold has swolen and clogged the coolant system, check my pierberg post in the mk2 maintenance + info section :)
It may also be a faulty waxstat, if you remove it and chuck it in a tub of boiling water you should see the pin in the middle extend. Doing this can also 'reset' a faulty one sometimes :)
