Hi all,
I finally got round to overhauling the gear linkage and selector setup as per http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33100.0. What a difference. It feels like a new car.
One quick question though...
I had to remove the heat shield to get the gear lever out, it was quite a job cos I had the S/S exhaust in the way. In the process the heat shield fitting points just seemed to just fall apart on the shield itself. Is it worth getting a new one? It seems to be a lot noisier in the car without it . :undecided:
Would it be just as good to use something like waxoil schutz for a little sound deadening?
Cheers

Id get a replacement to be honest. The waxoil will probably melt with the heat. Its there for a reason remember. Without it the new new gear cup and ball may melt or deterioate etc etc.

Good point, I don't want to have to replace it all again in a few months.
Also, this time of year I want as little heat in the car as possible.
Cheers

Let me now how much a new one cost, please.

191 803 309 M is the part number i think. Give your local VW a call or try GSF etc.

Is it no 2 in the pic?

That one is £40 from VW, think they're the same on all MK2s so if ya have a decent scrappy near you may be worth a look. Also heard tales of people repairing them with bits cut off old drinks cans :)

The clips on mine have holes also so i just used really bit washers.
