Hi. My mk2 overheats very quickly while idle in traffic. The temperature gauge soars right up. I have combated this by turning the blowers on full whack and full heat. What is the problem? Is it the fan?
-
1st thing to check would be the fan. If it does not come on then there is a fault. To check if the fan is working then unplug the sensor plug in the bottom corner of the rad and bridge the pins. This should turn the fan on so watch your fingers! If it does then the sensor is shagged and needs replacing. If not then either the fan motor has blown or the wiring is fault. Replace both or do the cheapest 1st.

This happended to a Fiesta XR2I I owned once (I know, I know) turned out to be the relay was shafted and not telling the fan to come on. Replaced it and was sorted.
Would have to agree with the replace the cheapest bits first, although if you let the car get to operating temp with the bonnet open and the fan does not come on you can limit it to the wiring/relay/thermostat after you have bridges the pins again as mentioned by the Yoda of this forum
All the best

Repeat what i have said have you not. Hmmmm

Have you checked your coolant level? Also get the mixture checked,as an incorrect mixture will effect the boiling point

Yip, shhhhh I am trying to make it look like I know what I am talking about

Happened to me on my MK2 last year. Replaced the thermostat and that solved it. Had replaced the fan and fan switch first, but a thermostat + coolant is only cheap, so well worth doing first.
-
Where is the thermostat?
-
in the water pump housing behind an elbow bit of pipe
-
Does it have an electrical connector attached? Got any pics?

Follow the hose from the bottom of the radiator, the thermostat is behind the plastic flange it connects to. It has no electrical connection, it contains a lump of wax that expands & contracts with coolant temp.
To test if it is working, run the car from cold and feel the lower hose. It should stay stone cold till the temp gauge gets to about half way. If it gets lukewarm straight away, its stuck open/missing, if its still cold when the gauge gets to 3/4 its stuck shut.
The fan should kick in around 3/4, so check this as well!

Before you all started hijacking! I thought I'd tell you that the problem was the fan switch. £21 + vat for a new one from VW.
