Hi ive decided to invest in a air compressor and a spray gun for small jobs on the car like a mk4 spoiler and valances etc using 1k paint. Ive looked at the likes of screwfix who offer a wolfair 2hp 50ltr compressor for £130. Not really sure on what paint gun to go for, anyone got and recommendations keeping to a budget.

a friend has a 25ltr compressor with the vision of spraying and after the 1st stroke it's fine, 2nd stroke it's stuggling, 3rd it's almost not working, 4th it's spitting the paint out...
I would be thinking something a bit bigger if you want to do things properly.
If you're only doing little things do it with cans. I've done a front bumper with cans and the finish was awesome. You'd never know by looking at it and on the car it's fantastic.

I know what you mean cans can be good but can end up expensive, hopefully id get a better finish with a compressor and i might attempt some larger bits if it goes well. From hearing about you mates 25ltr compressor i hope the 50ltr will be upto it as i dont fancy spending much more.

I only got a 50ltr compressor and its more than up to the job, I've done valances and 3 sets of wheels with it no problem, I have experimented with a few guns and find the gravity feed one to work best

Thanks gazb dizzie was starting to get me worried it wouldnt be upto the job so im glad to hear it. If you dont mind me asking where did you get your gun from, price and is it fully adjustable also have you used any air tools with it and if so how have they performed?

Big paint and supply shake up is in the pipeline for early next year, the trade is switching over to water based technology.. making the supply of cellulose, 1k, 2k and most other things illeagle to supply.. I would hold fire, and stick to rattle cans for now!

I heard something a while back but im sure there will be something to replace it with which would be compatible with an airline and spray gun. If you know any more let me know.

Just "Google" "COSSH hazardous substances", you should find something in that minefield that relates to what I'm on about! I reckon that this is going to put a lot of small body shops out of work!

Got the air gun from an ebay shop, cant remember which one tho, its a sealy and was about £40, I have got other air tools, but I never used em tho sorry.
Next january is when all the paint changes I believe, but after speaking to my local paint supplier I cant see it being much of a problem, he says that the new paints will work fine with the airbrush and spraygun :undecided:, maybe he lies :undecided:

Im sure the market will change to accept it and make the necessary changes but a compressor will always be needed. It did mention workshops will ned training with new machinery and compliant spray guns. So for me i think i might just have to buy a compliant hvlp gun next year plus il be using the compressor to whizz my suspesnsion nuts off and other bits anyway so isnt all bad.

yeah a compressor is always handy to have, but i`ve got a few mates who have body shops and spray booths and they used water based paints/base coats but the lacquer they have to use is 2k primer which makes me laugh, it`s got something to do with, they can`t as yet make a waterbased lacquer that can deal with all extremes of temperature

Doesnt sound too good. Well for the moment i should be fine as i stocked up on 2 litres(unthinned) and 5 litres of thinners for £30.

I've got that very compressor. When you look at sprayguns they usually say how big a compressor you need to run, stick to one that the compressor can keep up with and you should have no problems.
