yes it is u need all the power steering bits off a p/s model. if ur handy then u can do it yourself if not then a garage will prob charge a few hours labour for it. expect to pay £80+ for all the parts i reckon

Hi,

I am taking my engine out this week and was thinking about converting mine to power steering.....

I guess it would be far easier to convert with engine out?

Takes all the feeling away from the road though.

Complete list of bits you need:
Waterpump pulley
PAS crank pulley
PAS + Alternator belts
Rack
Pipes
Reservoir
Rack -> column UJ
UJ boot & rubber sealing ring
1x pas rack rubber mount
Bracket off inner wing (stops the PAS pipes rubbing on the brake pipe there)
Bracket from bottom of engine (stops the pipe dropping down onto the road at the front)
2 litres of Dexron II ATF fluid

Slick: I disagree, my 16v pas rack feels almost exactly the same as my non-pas rack at speed, but a hell of a lot nicer when parking!  I've heard the 16v PAS racks are quicker, which may have something to do with it.

nah personally i like to feel the road, when at speed, i feel that the pas has taken all of that feeling away. Don't get me wrong it's great for parking, but country lanes and the like = bad.

I still have plenty of feel thru my setup, cant say I've noticed any less since the upgrade!
Perhaps its because mine is a refurbed rack, UJ new rod ends & ball joints etc.

I get plenty of feeling also. PS does make turning easier but id hardly say its light. Its not like the punto's and their girly button anyway. Each to their own i suppose.

Yup same, when driving along it seems heavier than when you stop!

I still have plenty of feeling also. Lets face it the PS doesent exactly make it light. i.e its not like the girly button in fiat puntos.

Interesting comment about the 16v rack being quicker which leads me to ask the obvious question............................it should be possible to swap the 16v rack into an 8v set-up wouldn't it? Have a missed something obvious, as usual

As long as the pipes still connect and physically its the same shape and size.

Cheers for that, I guess that's a project for the cold winter nights when the engine transplant comes up..............if the new project doesn't take over from the GTi....................a Fiat Coupe 20v, same as the Golf really just a few more valves

yep it is, 8v & 16v racks are physically the same shape & size.

I'm not sure if the quicker rack statement is true or not, one of those things that gets passed arround word of mouth, but isn't really backed up.  ETKA is no help as most of the part numbers are discontinued!
