Title: AAARRGGGHHHHH!!!! MY GOLF WONT TURN OVER!!!
Post by: monkeeboi on 09 July 2006, 19:49
:angry:got this gti the other week for a bargain. it's had a new cam belt, timing done and new plugs. the owner before had put a new coil and alternator on it. it chose not to tourn over the other day after just getting me home from work with no problem. it has happened a couple of times since, so thinking it was the starter motor jamming i have put a new one on today. it started without a problem, then for a second time, but the third it has done exactly the same thing as before!! i have tried rocking the car in gear as this is what i did the other times but still nothing. just a click. HOW FRUSTRATING!!! has anyone else had a problem like this and do you know what the problem is?? please help!!!!!!!

try replacing the earth strap between the gearbox, shell, battery.

I had a similar problem a while back and bought a brand new starter from VW for £105 only to find out there was nothing wrong with my old one!

Right, earth straps as dizzie said. Very easy to spot as they just bolt onto nothing pretty much.

Other than that, the wiring to the starter is all ok?

It could be a worse problem with the crank, possible slowley seizing up, although if everything electrical is all working then it sounds like there may not be enough juice in the battery, has it been checked?

Possibly the starter solenoid or Relay?

I would of thought you'd know if it was the crank getting stiff. it'd run really hot and be fairly slow...

Earth straps can be bought from most car places. about £5. saying that I could do with putting a new one on the daily. it acts like the battery is flat turning over very slowly. eventually it'll fire up after 5 seconds of holding the key on :D
