Hi
As above really - from what year did Big bumpers become standard fit on MkII Golfs. I'm looking at a MKII Gti 16v next week - 1991 / H reg. I've been told it has big bumpers and that's the way it came out of the factory.
Certainly the year and the plate sound about right for big bumpers - just wondering is there any way to be sure that they're genuine fit and not retro.
If anyone can help, t'would be appreciated
(btw - I did a search to try and find the anser to this question before i posted this up but couldn't find anything - sorry :embarassed: )

I think they started on a 1990.

didn't all 90 spec have big bumpers and skirts?

As i said, "90"
The genuine fit will have no gaps between bumpers and body work. The pattern fit or non genuine ones will have gaps.

Cheers folks

Around G reg 90, but not ALL G reg GTIs have them, some are late reged 89s so still on the small bumpers. By 91 they should all be big bumper models though :)
Check that it actually is a 90 spec and not a smallie that has had a kit bolted on. Look for the hazard switch, if its on the dash its a pre 90, if its on the steering column its a proper 90 spec :)

Very late 89 G's had them, my Nov 89 Royal Blue 8v has the CE2 wiring and genuine big bumpers, arches, skirts etc

yeah, it all depends on when they were made, and how quickly they got registered! Basically if its an 89-90 on a G, you can never be sure without double checking where the hazard switch is :)

Point taken here, genuine is best. I'll remember that when the front gets replaced

GSF items do also fit well, but you have to make sure you get the proper big bumper wing brackets, these are normally the cause of poor fitting bumpers.
Genuine are better though for sure :)
I've also seen pics of aftermarkey bumper brackets that were severly corroded after only a short time, check out matey-mateys site!
The front bumper may not be an area you want to compromise on also, since the bumper mountings also hold the front engine subframe in!
