Hi,
When I pull up at a junction or traffic lights etc. and dip the clutch the engine revs drop right down and then bounce back up again, what causes this ?
Also when Im driving along and take my foot off the accellerator I get a few pops & bangs out of the exhaust, is this related, if not what causes this ?
Car is a 1991 GTi 8v Digifant
cheers, Duncan

sounds similar to a problem i had which turned out to be a knackered distributer. Try that if i was you.
-
I would check the timing too
-
if the distributer was knackered then the car wouldnt start at all would it ???
I'll get the timing checked soon.
Anything else it could be, fueling ???
-
Could be fuel and timing best thing to do is get a RR tune or just a standard krypton tune as they should adjust both of these.
-
also check the micro switches on the throttle body as these can cause these stall symptoms. also ur exhaust could not be sealed properly causing the pops
-
My last Golf had the problem of nearly stalling when the clutch was dipped (not popping and banging though) and it turned out to be a split in a vacuum pipe that was affecting the mixture
-
does it happen when its hot or all the time.
the aforementioned car that did it for me used to do it when it was hot, i was on the way to work one morning when after booting it and lifting off it would pop and bang and then cut out and then wouldnt start until you left it sit for a few minutes.

check the idle switch as said, then check the idle as per my digifant tuning guide in the MK2 maintenance+info section :)
-
Your near stalling will probably be your ISV mate, whip it off and soak it in petreol for half a day - a full day. Then give it a good blast with carb cleaner, and a little WD40 to finish. Reconnect and see what she's like then.
-
ISV, is that the idle valve ? If so whereabouts is it on the digifant......is it that thing with the black rubber ring around it that rubs on my strut brace
-
Yeah that sounds about right. It's a metal cylindrical tube sticking of the top of the rocker cover. Should have 2 vac hoses connected and a plug connector on the right.
-
okay I'll give that a go tomorow.
Is it okay to soak the whole thing in petrol ie. the electrical plug end as well ?

Yeah that's what I did, then blasted through with carb cleaner, a bit of WD40 then left to dry for an hour or 2.
