Title: Watch Top Gear on 21st December
Post by: ZweiHundertFunf on 18 December 2003, 17:40
Hi All,

Just thought I'd let you know that on Wednesday this week Top Gear filmed an old vs. new drag race thing for the show on the 21st.

Full list of cars involved was :

Mk 1 golf GTi vs. mk4 GTi Turbo
3000zx vs. 350z
205 1.9 GTi vs. 206 GTi 180
Escort Cosworth vs. Focus RS
mk1 MR2 vs new RX8 (Not sure about this one)

Thought you'd be interested  ;D

Right I'm off before I get accused of being rude/arrogant/long-winded etc.   ::)  ;)

Merry Christmas !  ;D ;D

One last point, they didn't time them round the track, it was a straight drag race so the older versions didn't really have a fair chance  :(

Guess the manufacturers don't want their new models being shown up by the old-timers eh ?!  ;)

Which version of the Mk4 1.8T were they running? the 150 or 180?
In my mind they should have been 180 out of the box which will run 0-60 in under 8 seconds as standard.
What engine was in the Mk1 GTI?

Mine will still beat it  ;).
Steve.

But yours isn't standard  ;)
Would yours beat a Mk4 with an IHI big turbo conversion running 360bhp with 360 ft/lbs or torque - that would be modded against modded.
What power did the Mk1 GTi's kick out as standard?
Title: Re:Watch Top Gear on 21st December
Post by: mk1 on 21 December 2003, 20:44
About 112 hp, Mine is not standard but evolved, like the mk4 turbo  ;).

But is was old model against current model. Surely the 180bhp Mk 4 would leave the Mk1 ?
Im only guessing as I really don't know the power of the Mk1 and 2 - very nice motors though.

Mk1 is a mere 110/112 BHP but it does only weigh around 800kg.
Power to weight........................... ;D ;D

Post by: kniterider on 21 December 2003, 23:44
yep thats it the old power to weight thing!!!!, they never said which model of gti it was for the mk4, but i still think a mk1 would do it!!! no turbo lag or nowt!!, it was only over 1/5th of a mile!!! if you had a bit more it would have been level!!! ::)
Title: Re:Watch Top Gear on 21st December
Post by: richandhazel on 21 December 2003, 23:48
Totally agree........had to be 1/5th of a mile for our old Mk1 to stand a chance.............but then that is the fun bit, that we can legally use in every day driving....and enjoy ;D

I can confirm the following

1. My car (the mk1) is a 100% standard Mk1 1.8 with 112bhp.
2. The Mk4 was a 180bhp 1.8T
3. It was 1/5 of a mile not 1/4

In observation

1. The mk4 was really poor at starting, but better with the ASR turned off.
2. It was gaining very rapidly on the mk1 at the end of the 1/5 and the 1/4 was virtually identical
3. There was some 'serious' politics going on between the BBC and VW about the outcome, can't say more at the moment!

Cheers,

Drew.
