hi guys im going to fit fogs to my gti. the holes are ready just aint been cut out, can anyone give me details on fitting/fixing the brackets and also any tips on cutting the hole out.
i want to have them wired to the fog switch on the dash so could anyone explain how to do that
any help appreciated

the wiring is under the bonnet already. you just need to connect the fog loom into it. it's a plug under your header tank. the loom you need just runs from those 2 terminals on the plug to the lights. you could make one very easily.
brackets are easy. just 1 nut on each side. As for cutting the holes. a jigsaw would probably be best just be careful

cheers mate just wondering how the brackets actullly fix to the bumper.
also could you please give me some more info on this wiring as im not very mechanically minded.
thanks mate

they bolt thru a hole in the metal bumper insert above and sort of hang on a plastic lug on the side nearest the wing. when u get underneath and offer it up to the car u will see wat i mean lol
-
ok cheers mate, can anyone help with making this wiring loom and wiring them up
cheers

As dizzie said you just need to run some wires from the connector under the head tank. This is already wired to your fog light switch, use a multimeter to make sure its the right one before you chop the plug off it!
Once you have run the wires, bung some connectors for the bulbs on, connect them up and hey presto. I actually got a fog light loom out of an old 16v from a scrappy for a fiver or something.

cheers mate i just dont know what wires i need to run and how i connect them to that plug under the head tank (what is the head tank anyway)
-
its the expansion tank under the right hand side of the bonnet. the bit u put water in. its round or kidney shaped yellow plastic thing right next to the suspension turret on the right

any one got a fog loom lying around?

So at the back under the water tank should be a white(ish) connector with nothing attached. Stick a multimeter into it (one prong into each hole in the socket) and check the voltage, it should be zero, then turn on the fog lamp switch and check again, should be around 12V.
If i remember rightly there are just two wires going to the connector, a positive and a negative. Using normal lighting wire (from halfords) you need to split these two wires into four so that you can run a positive and negative to each of the fogs. Imagine a 'Y' split for each wire, doing it properly i would get some bullet connectors or something to attach it all together with.
When you have a positive and negative wire going to each of the fogs you will need to solder them onto a bulb socket. Easy enough. I can't remember which one it is... I think its a H3 type but someone will be able to confirm i hope. Once you know which one it is, get a connector (prob from Halfrauds or an autoelectrician) solder it on and connect up.
-
Just to confirm. Is there only 1 plug and the passenger side? Isnt there a plug on the drivers side too?
-
There is only 1 plug and it's on the passenger side.
-
ok cool mate your a star
i wouldnt mind if you could let me know more about this soldering.
so if im right you have to solder the cable to the fog light, but how does it connect to the plug under the expansion tank
cheers mate

You would have to solder the two wires for each side to whatever type of connectors the fog bulbs need.
For the expansion tank socket you would need to chop it off and strip the wires, for this one i would use bullet connectors that you crimp on. Cheap from halfords again...
You would put a single wire, that you stripped from the socket, into one end of the bullet connector and the two foglamp wires (ie. both positive wires) into the other end and then crimp them. Then repeat for the other wire.
If you were to solder these wires it would be the 'Y' connection (ie.wrap two positives from fogs onto the one positive from socket and solder). Then wrap with electricians tape! I don't recommend this way but i have done worse in my time!

Does anyone have a picture of the plug under the header tank?
-
Well seems as its you.... (and that i am on hols at the mo with not a lot to do!)

Luck has nothing to do with it, its a miracle i need! Come to think about it, where do any of these wires go?
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo what have i started!
