Title: Clonking from rear. Any ideas.
Post by: 16v on 07 July 2006, 09:32
Hi,

Got a really annoying clonking noise coming from the rear suspension somewhere. On even surfaces, it's fine but over speed humps, potholes and such, it is really noisy.

CLONK is a perfect description of the noise it makes.

It's driving me mad. Any idea what it could be?

Youve been saying to use a jubilee clip on worn zorst mounts for a while now, whats with this current obsession of yours? Sureley you will get bad vibrations doing that?

Cheers for the replies

Not the exhaust, so I reckon it's top mounts.

Have to wait til my coilovers are bought and fitted.

Will dodgy top mounts give me a crap ride as it's on totally OEM suspension at the mo and the ride is biz.

Yes i suppose it could as it results in excess play. By the way your coil overs wont come with new top mounts. Maybe now is a good time to buy a polly set.

Because it works brilliantly, it stops the rubber from stretching and any vibration is still absorbed by the rubber. (as long as you dont do it up TOO tightly!)  Believe me it works, my zaust has been this way for months!
There are rubbers with built in chains available, which essentially do the same thing, but people have reported they still snap and have found that chucking a jubilee clip round instead has solved the problem!

Also depends on how much the exhaust expands when it's hot, i know mine grows by about an inch, joes grows by and inch and a half, so whilst cold it may look clear, when it is warm it could cut right back on the clearance.
