Does anyone know how to check the alternator on my 91 8v? Just been to get new tyres fitted to all corners for an MOT, on the way she was cutting out and once at the garage with new boots on, she stuggled to start. The helpful geezer at the garage checked the battery, he said it was fine but needed a charge. He then checked the alternator and said that it was not charging the battery! Nooooooooo! Anyhoo, is it possible to check/repair the alternator without having to fork out stupid money to get a new/refurbished one fitted? If these repair bills get any higher, I might just cut my losses and get another car!

yeah its probably the brushes that regulate the current have worn down and are no longer completeing the circuit. its a case of old out new in maybe £20 tops and half hour of ya time? read up about it in a haynes manual its easy to do, or have a look in the how to guides there may be something in there

If the bloke in the garage checked out both the battery and the alternator, then i'd be tempted to throw a new / recon alternator at it, or risk a trip to the scrappy

I hear ya. I think, if I make it to the MOT station tomorrow afternoon, I'll just ask him to see what he can do for it. He is a bit of a VW buff so he may have a spare one lying around. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow... Fingers crossed...

you can buy new brushes and regulator pack from GSF and it don't cost much as far as I can remember and is a doddle to fit...

Well, this morning I went to start the 8v and she sprang into life. I decided before I set off for the MOT, I'd check the voltage output from the alternator. Turns out it is pumping out 13.36V. No worries. Drove to the test centre and left her there while I walked to the pub (fresh orange and lemonade I'd like to add). 5 minutes after the test had begun, he's on the phone informing me he can't open the bonnet to get to the VIN plate. "Has it failed on the first test" I thought? I informed him of the emergency release accesible behind the grill. One hour later, I turn up at the garage and right enough she had failed. 1 blown bulb on the nearside repeater, no rear number plate surrounds (tracked to broken wire inside rubber sheath between boot lid and roof). Rear exhaust hanger rubber missing. Rear seat belts not tested as they were under the rear seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Handbrake not working on one side (was working before I put it in, now the handbrake lever points skyward, thinking heavy handed mechanic here). Rear brake back plate not secure or something. Anyhoo, apart from the handbrake, I've sorted all the PETTY stuff out so fingers crossed she'll be ready for the weekend. Who knows, seeing as she behaved, I might treat her to a full Mongoose stainless system when I see the PASS certificate.
