Title: Is it worth havin door speakers in mk2 ?
Post by: eddie1905 on 03 July 2006, 18:29
I've just fitted a new hu in t car and the speakers now sound a lot better than with the standard hu . I will b upgrading the current speakers in the dash and rear and will prob run a sub in the boot so is it worth fittin my door pods from my other car ? If so how would I wire them in as the car at t mo only has door bins wd it b a easy job or is it best to get done by an audio shop. All advice greatly received thks.

fiddly for big rugby playing fingers but no real probs,
undo some dash, feed cables down around gubbins from unit slot ( remember to keep them even lengths), - use electrical cable with a loop in the end to locate an pull cables-

pull up trim in f/well. locate the rubbers on the sidewall of the footwell, poke hole thru, feed cable,  remove door cards,( be carefull with the original plastic if any still present)

I removed the original little door tidy pull open trays, increased the remaining aperture to suit the cones I selected , using a round file  it took seconds.

the sound is well balanced, that extra tin  is appreciated up front

If you currently have the pull out bin things on your doors then im pretty sure its a simple upgrade to swap them for pockets containing speakers. If you do this its a good idea to buy a set of components. Install the main cone in the door and hide the tweeters in the dash speaker locations. You will get the best results this way and everything will still look standard.

I just invested in a good set of dash speakers and a pair of 6x9s in a proper MDF stealf shelf.  Sounds great and looks completly std.  I also get to keep my door bins for random useless junk which may help me one day if I break down

What dash speakers did you buy as i cant seem to find any to fit and with the cost of replacement grilles and speakers for the door not sure if its worth the hassle

A couple on  months back I put speakers in the door, as I had to have my 6x9's blaring in the back so I could hear the radio while on the motorway. So, I bought cheapy Pioneer speakers from Halfrauds £30, two griles and screws from VW, about £18, two crossovers from Maplins and two gromets to keep everything dry between the car and my door.

Put the speakers in the grill, run wires into the doors, and used the dash mounted speakers as tweaters. Now I know this isn't what they are designed for but to be honest the sound is great! Of course super heavy bass distortes the door speakers, you can just adjust and lower the amount of bass to the front.

Couldn't be bothered to remove dash mounted speakers and put in new, but they work fine. It all comes down to how much you want to pay. Ideally, i'd like a sh!t hot sound system but as money is tight I did as above.

Oh yeah, I can now hear my 'tunes' while zooming up the motorway!!

In my previous Golf I only had speakers in the dash so I fitted a pair of custom fit Infinity's and for tiny speakers they were really good. I'm tempted to run a pair of speakers in the door pods and a pair in the dash, has anyone done this ?

Has any one ever used these?

thinking of these and then maybe putting a sub in the boot, dont know if i fancy door pods as the bins are great for hiding my mobile and stuff, out of the way of prying eyes.Currently got some Alpine 4x6 in the parcel shelf struts which sound good so sub or not to sub that is the question?

Ive been wanting to run a set of 3 way components like this for ages now. But at the moment its quite low on my list.

Something allong these lines

F*ck paying that, Iwas thinking more along the lines of a pair of two ways in the dash and a pair of two ways in the door pods and just a sub in the boot ?

I would go with a dedicated component in the door pod.  A 2 way will only compromise bass response and you will get plenty of treble from the dash speakers.

Due to the directional nature of treble frequency you have no need for it pointing at your ankles and it might even upset the staging from the dash.

In an ideal world you would have a set of good components in enlarged door pockets, with decent tweeters set up at around head height.  Trouble with this is they need to be fitted to the A pillars to get the ideal height really, so a bit of fabrication is involved.
Decent sub in the boot with a proper box and you'll have a pretty damn fine setup.  Costs money though!

If you really want to get into car audio systems, have a look at the talk audio forums:

Agreed no point having 2 ways in the door pods. And Jonny you wouldent need tweeters mounted up hight in pods. A better solution is to mount them on the dash pointing upward. The windscreen then directs the sound directly at your face, nice and high. Works a treat. And yes you benefit loads by getting larger door pods. As for the cost of the 3 ways i posted, you get what you pay for!

not always, my mate who is well into his audio (j_s) was only satisfied with the tweeters angled inwards at about 1/3 of the way up the A pillars.  All comes down to personal preference, and how anal you are about your sound!

I suggested putting them into the interior mirror cover trims, but that wasn't good enough either!

I agree that it all depends how anal you want to be!  One of my cars i spent ages getting the tweeters just how i liked them (and yes about half way up the A pillar) but due to lazyness i find the dash method works 90% as well...  Only my opinion of course.

The Mk2 seems a real bad starting point to get decent sounds out of easily!

Yeah I'm also lazy, 2x 6x9s in an MDF shelf and a pair of good dash speakers is plenty good enough for me!
