Title: Where is the second horn on GTi 8v
Post by: tomocr on 03 July 2006, 12:36
I've read on some posts in this section that there is a second horn on some 8v GTi's (MK2).  I have found the one behind the grill but according to some people, there is a second one under the wheel arch.  Could someone shed some light on this and give me a clue as how to access it as I feel it could be this phantom horn causing my fuse to blow.  Cheers.

I take it it is under the nearside arch as this is where the cables runs from the 1st horn?  Is it under the plastic membrane or should i be able to see it without jacking it up and taking off the wheel?

yup passenger side arch, you can see it in the gap between the wheel arch & bumper.  On a small bumper model it might be tricky to get to because of the lower valance, but on a big bumper model theres loads of room to get to it.  You can also see it when you take the arch liner out, you'll probably have enough room without removing the wheel if you just trun the wheel to full lock.

Excellent, I'm gonna have a look now.  Hopefully I will find the whole lot corroded causing the short!!!!  I might get my car MOt'd this week if I can sort it!!!  Wait out...

YEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAA!  Awesome.  Found the 2nd horn (cheeky).  Traced the cables back up to where they join the first horn and relay.  Found that both horns cables were "swaged" together and both the black/yellow and brown/black swaged areas were green.  Instead of trimming all the wires back and recrimping, I decided to leave the second horn out of the system untill the MOT is done and just sorted the first.  Should be okay, I have replaced the OE horn behind the grill with a two-tone affair.  Thanks guys for the assistance, you probably just saved me an hour in labour charges.  Have a beer!
