I'm looking for advice on how to lock the front top mount nut.
I have fitted FK Konigsport Coilovers, fully adjustable ride height and dampers. So, where the old original VAG suspension had the allen key these new coilovers have a lovely adjustment notch for the dampers. The only way I can see to lock them is to use a 10 or 11mm spanner (11 seems slightly too big and 10 too small so not sure as I'm prone to rounding nuts and bolts) on the nut before the adjuster whilst at the same time tightening the 22mm nut to hold it all in.
Thing is now that it's a spanner I need to use and not an allen key, which was easy with a spark plug socket, I now have to somehow get to the main nut (22mm) whilst at the same time allowing myself access to the smaller locking nut above it?
Rubjonny suggested using something similar to http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8073404517 but I wasn't sure if there was enough room between the outside edge of the main nut and the sides of the recess in the top plate to get the spanner (even a deep spanner) in there?
Not sure if it's related but another odd thing is that the drivers side top mount plate seems to sit a lot higher than the passenger side which locked down no problem without anything but a 22mm deep socket.
Any advice from anybody who's fitted coilovers much appreciated.
Cheers
Ian

i used a deep spanner like the one in the ebay link, and also had to grind a bit of it, you still have to put the spanner on at a bit of an angle tho :undecided:
-
What did you use on the locking nut? Like I say 10mm doesn't seem to fit but 11mm seems quite prone to slipping and rounding it off
There's always something aint there?
-
maybe the nut is an imperial size, can you get a small adjustible spanner on it?
-
I too use a deep ring spanner on my KONI's. Never had an issue with it fitting inside the cup. Maybe i just have a magic spanner!

"Hey kids, its time for the adventures of Ben and his magic ring spanner!"
-
So I'll have to get myself a deep ring spanner for the bottom nut but what about the locking nut on the coilovers? agreed on an adjustable or is there a specific tool for the job?
Don't want to bugger up my coilovers as they aint cheap.
Cheers guys

Hey that sounds rude. And no im not gay!
As for your top nut i would try some imperial spanners 1st to see if you can get a good fit. Its always better if you have the correct tool. Adjustables are poo and you will probably end up rounding it!

Did you get any instructions with the kit? Does it give any sizes there?
-
Also i wouldent use mole grips or alike as you may crush the adjuster and totally nacker it.
-
Instructions?
If by that you mean the small piece of paper with crappy drawings showing nothing more than how they fit together and what you had to drill at the back to make the rears fit then yes, I have read the instructions. There's nothing about what settings they recommend for the dampers, there's nothing in writing on how they fit together. To be honest for the money I expected a lot clearer instruction with maybe some words aswell as/instead of the simple vague pictures.
Will give you all an update after giving it another go tonight.
Thanks again

Should of bought KONI's
they are konis really, just cheap ones without instructions

I can't honestly say that I've given it much of a go with the 11mm, I just gave it a quick try with the open end, noticed it was slipping slightly so didn't continue.
Yeah the Konigsport's came with Koni adjusters, mate asked me if they were Koni's because of that so I'm guessing they're made in the same place and just re-labelled, packaged and sold under a different name.
You have the same ones veedubgti16v? What settings have you gone for with the dampers?
-
Yeah the top of the FK range coil overs basically are KONI's. However you get instructions with KONI.
-
yeah i have the same, i think they are set at 1 turn at the front and 1 1/2 at the back, but its all personal to how you like your car really, just play about with them
