Title: Direct feed to airbox
Post by: Godzilla on 30 June 2006, 22:25
I decided to make a direct feed for my airbox. I got some pipe from Halfords for £7.

I cut a bit out of the grill that the pipe needed to sit behind and re-stuck the grill part so it was flat instead of facing downwards. My idea for this was the air could flow straight into the pipe rather that coming up from under the grill.I could have left the bit of the grill out but thought it looked chav.

I then got the hose and using 2 cable ties tied it to the alternator housing...as far away from the alternator blades as i could!! Using a dab of no nails on the holes i had to make for the cable ties to go through as dont want any air escaping! Then put the end of the hose about 1" from the intake on the airbox.

Looks good!  I did something similar with mine, its times like these you really wish you had an airflow pressure/temp sensor so you could see how much difference it actually made!

Does it feel any better?

The digifant 8v GTI does actually have an inlet air temp sensor in the MAF, use pins 1 & 4 and check the haynes for a graph which shows temp/resistance :)

u can also reposition the temp sensor for the mfa computer into your intake pipe if u wanted.

i would connect the metal pipe into the airbox completely tho there is no point the end dangling about loose

Sorry have to agree dont like it.

I would try to make the bend less harsh, the less of a bend the faster the flow of air. On my car I have removed a large chunk of the bottom of my air filter with a jigsaw () cant be seen and makes a cracking noise when you floor it.

I would agree, maybe try to get the pipe to fix onto the airfilter itself so only cold air goes in. You could cut the bit facing up off completely and join the piping to it.

just cut a huge hole in the wing side of your air box if you want a rorty induction noise.

having that pipe will make no difference to anything.

on a mk2 digi theres this funnel thing in the bottom of the airbox, just remove that.  Reversible and gives a nice throaty noise on wot

Dont want a boy racer iduction noise. Just want cold air to get into the airbox fast. If left standard the air comes from beneath the grill and into the engine to where the 2" dia' square intake has to pull in air. If a feed from the grill is directly fed to it the mid range responce is a lot better as there is a constant force of air going in. I put a hairdryer to the grill and felt behind it, not a huge amont of air going in...put it to my air intake and feels like you have your hand over the front of the hairdryer which = .

It does not look too bad although I did something similar to an old 16v I had but mine was not so noticable as I did not remove any of the grill and just cable tied it in place.

You are going to need a bend in the pipe when you do this sort of direct air flow, plus put some holes in the bend. Otherwise you will be sucking water in on a wet day  and creating your own internal MK2 paddling pool.

Not a big fan of the styling, but if it does the job?

try and get the bit that goes behind the drivers side light, it does exactly the same thing and probably does a better job too. thats what the bit sticking out the airbox is for :nerd:

i did do similar to this but absolutely butchered an airbox bottom and moulded the intake into it so it was airtight, but it didnt really make any diffrence and the ally pipe went brittle and cracked after about a month
