Hi guys, im looking for a lifeline here, ive just finished restoring my 89 8v digi golf. its been rebored, c5rank refaced, all new bearings, head overhauled with all new seals and tappets, ive put it back together and its drinking juice and is really slow.
Its only got any power when you hit 4000rpm, below that its flat as a fart. Ive had the timing set which made it better but its still slow as above!
Any ideas what to do , any good garages in derbyshire?
Please help, ive spent 3 years lovingly sorting this car out, dreaming of driving it and its currently crap and as slow as my wifes 1.2 clio!!!!!!!
Thanks

maybe get it on a co meter firstly?
-
sounds like timing is out, maybe on the cam? aside from that, how many miles have you covered since the rebuild, engine could still be a bit tight, if you are stuck we have a workshop in Ilkeston, Derbys and could have a quick gander, might not be any help but the tea costs nothing!

Check John Sherwin out, independent VW specialists in Somercotes. Not the cheapest, but no-where as much as the main stealers! And deffo know all there is about Dubs. Ask to speak to John if you can, if you want tell him Mark Bradley with the grey 1992 8v recommended them. Not sure if that'll work or not but hey why not! Phone number is 01773 604400. Located just on the main Somercotes drag (B600), between Alfreton & Selston, just down from the Co-op on your left as you head towards Selston.
You know all us local folk ought to do a meet soon :)

any ideas on where to meet? loads of vw nuts in ilkeston would be interested.
-
Thanks guys, im gonna ring that guy in somercoates, i really want it sorting cos i love my MK2.
The CO was apparently ok when i got it MOTed!
A meet would be great, didnt know there was many members living near me. Im in North Wingfield near Clay Cross. But guys, let me get her running sweetly before we meet, dont want to look stupid or be jealous of your cars cos they work properly!!!!!
-
erm have you run it in? or are you just racing it?
-
Im running it in , ive done 500miles and just changed the oil and filter.
-
Yeah it's well worth giving them a call and just explain things. Late last year I got them to re-build my gearbox with a new clutch, and it's the smoothest box I've felt on a MK2 now. But then I guess being fully rebuilt it bloody should be!!! Just have to get rid of my wiggle in the stick and it'll be cool.
As far as a meet maybe we should start a post, see who's interested & where they're from then go on that. Ilson eh? Spent a lot of (drunken) time up there! Just to be in music college for 3 years up there @ SEDC. You don't know a guy called Ian Evans do you? Be about 26 now lives just on the overpass behind Bath St, just behind the supermarket. Is that still Somerfield?
-
think its shut down at the mo, don't know the guy you are talking about, probably seen his car about if its a vw!! some nice ones around amongst the bodykitted chav mobiles.
-
Nah he don't own one so I guess he's not as cool as us! Used to be good mates during music college but just sort of fell out of touch when he went to Uni and started working in the real world :)
Ever noticed the chicks dig a nice MK2 GTI?
-
was it rebuilt using all the right torque settings. I know it may sound silly, but if you did the cam up too tight it'll struggle to spin properly.
-
and for the first 1000miles or so you are not meant to go over 4k.
-
when i re-built mine it was very tight on start up but just wanted to pull hard as soon as you pulled away! not sure why yours would be so sluggish

Have you listened to your self speak? You dirty old trollope you!

Yes ive definitely torqued it up right, im beginning to wonder if its the mechanical timing at the cam, what it said in haynes didnt match with what i found in the engine. I matched the marks up with the arrows on the plastic cam cover case, not the head as it said in haynes, that didnt look right. I just thought it wouldnt run if the timing was out ?
Oh yeah, i know i shouldnt go over 4000 revs, but its a bit tempting sometimes, only done it a couple of times. The car runs so slow i can hardly keep up with normal traffic around town below 4000rpm, it just doesnt pick up!
-
it will run, just be lumpy as fook on idle and damn slow to pick up, and also you might be able to hear it pinking. Best option if you can afford it is to get it to stealth (or another equally good company) and get it RR set up. Stealth is £58 for roughly an hour on the rollers. Mine went there when it had a little problem (16v) and came back with a 50bhp increase cos it was running that pap.
-
as i said previously, it sounds like cam timig might be out, its not hard to get wrong. get the same symptoms with land rover diesels (slow enough to start with) in that if cam timig is out the throttle response is very sluggish and max revs are lowered.
-
Definitly the timing, mine was exactly the same mate! Check my digifant tuning guide in the maintenance + info section, pay close attention to the correct procedure for setting the dizzy timing correctly.
-
take it to jbs autodesigns at bottom of new whittington hill, really do know there stuff and good to talk to, is your golf black by any chance, am from clay cross, will keep an eye out for you, iv currently got a helios blue valver so if get someone waving it will be me, oh and jbs website is www.jbsautodesigns.co.uk , theres a good monthly meet at chatsworth if anyones intrested, will find a flyer out and post it in events section asap
-
My cars tornado red mate, small bumpers and 15" multispokes. Ive not used it much as its running so crap and its my second car anyway.
You may have seen my normal car around, its a mk2 ibiza tdi in stupid light metallic green, similar colour to the crazy frog!!!
Cars going in to that garage at somercoates on thursday, called to see them and they seemed to know what they were talking about. Will update this thread with the outcome! hope they sort it, i love my mk2.
-
print out my digi guide and hand it over,m just in case. The amount of garages who are clueless and just time it up at idle is pretty shocking!
-
chatsworth meet sounds good, plenty of room for the off-spring away from the cars!!!
-
I can deffo vouch than John Sherwin know his stuff. You'll have to let me know how you get on mate. The Chatsworth meet sounds really cool, we'll have to meet up and go for sure.

Just a final update!
I picked my car up from John Sherwin on friday morning, he has sorted the cam timing as i had put the sprocket on the wrong way round!!!!!!!! he also sorted the dizzy timing, CO and idle speed.
What can i say, its a different car, its fast and powerful and the economy is great. it pulls right through the rev range. I am in heaven!!!!!
I would definitely recommend John Sherwin in Somercoates if you are local and need work doing on your VW.
Thanks to everyone for your advice and recommendations
I am a happy man!

Glad you got it sorted dude. Easy mistake i suppose.
