Title: Difference between gti 8v and 16v exhaust ?
Post by: kalum088 on 30 June 2006, 08:56
Is there any difference in the exhaust for these 2 models ?

in other words would a 8v exhaust fit on a 16v ?

Cheers
Calum

I was speaking to someone today and the pipework at the back is the main difference...with flow next. The pipework on the rear of all iirc is 2" so they should all fit together...just that the 16v may need a more free flowing zorst that the 8v due to the differences in pressure needed at the different rpm.

The way I've worked it is that you start at the top ie VR6..16v..8v GTi's...then 2.0....etc...so in effect if you have a system from the lower(power) models you can fit one that is for a higher power...but you shouldn't go the other way eg 1.6 system on a VR6.

If I'm talking bollox then please say as this is what I've worked from in the past.

Well the MK2 16v has a 2.5" bore, and the 8v has a 2".  No idea if the same is true on a MK3 though!
But the part numbers on ETKA are different, so I assume the MK3 16v system is bigger.

You could fit an 8v zaust on a 16v though, the manifold->downpipe connections are the same.  But I guess you would loose a bit of performance unless it was a good flowed 8v system, i.e. stainless steel
