1990 16v Golf GTI high miles but generally running very nicely.
Got stuck in a horrible traffic jam, saw oil temp rise as high as 135c (in normal operation rarely gets above about 106c), while water temperature stayed little above the central reading. The car then stalled and remained prone to stalling all the way home. Any ideas? Thanks....

oil cooler may be blocked.......other than that.......?????
your allowed up to 145 c so no damge was done
is your radiator fan working......
alls i can thing of is the oil cooler the oil filter screws on this and it has 2 pipes connected to it check to see if both pipes are hot once the engines warmed up...

pull the two pipes of the oil cooler and flush it, they are full of rust & gunk
i cleaned mine out when i split one of the pipes - was amazed at the amount of sh!te that had gathered in it

Do you mean flush the pipes or flush the oil cooler???
ta

do both mate! i had loads aswell!
-
flush with what mate obviously not water cos u don't want that in ur engine oil now do ya!

err or not, majority of engines start developing problems at about 135C, i would never let my engine run above 127-8 at a push, (mine never rises above 100) nevermind idle and hitting 135!!!
Pull the sump off and clear out the oil pipes, usually they get gunked up and coat the inside of the pipes aswell as the entrance/exits.
Check the oil pressure too, may be possible that it is too low and causing your engine problems, but there is no way it should rise above about 115 max tbh.

i start worrying if it gets to 105, if it got to 135 id be turning the engine off there and then. giving it a good oil flush when you change the oil should keep the oil flowing round nicely, gsf sell a good flush.

I meant the water ways in the oil cooler and pipes :) I sprayed with Gunk first to remove the crap :)
