Hi Folks,
Just got back into Mk1 GTi ownership today. Its been about 19 years since I bought me first one but have always loved em.
Anyway, I have a slight problem with a miss fire on high revs or higher fuel demand when accelerating. All the electrics have been replaced and so has the petrol filler neck and fuel filter.
I was guessing that it could be blocked injectors so pulled them all out this afternoon to have a look see. They appear to be pretty new looking to me and on testing one it had a reasonable spray pattern. When I re fitted them I notice that the last one on the right does not seat properly and lifts out of its seat when revved. The rubber ring seal on the injector looks twisted some how?
Has anyone had this problem in the past? What did you do to rectify the problem?
I have orded a full new set of replacement rings to try tommorow as I am hoping that this cylinder is just recieving apoor mix with extra air getting in through the seal. What do you reckon?
Cheers for now

I'd say so yeah, get a complete set of seals on there and see where that leaves you. I'd imagine you'll need the CO adjusted once the air leak has been cured though!
If I were you I'd replace all the braided vacuum hoses, clean out the throttle body till its spotless then take it to a garage and have them set the idle/CO. Or get a CO meter and do it yrsen!

Had me a mare!! When pulling out injector number 1 it got a tad stuck. So me being me I gave it some welly and it came free minus the silver cap on the end...DOH! So its now time to take the head off and fish it out. Its good to be back!! ;)

Back again folks...
Well, its been a few weeks but at long last all is sorted on the engine front! get in!
Managed to remove the injector seats from the head which leaves a larger hole into the head. From here it was possible to fish the injector end from the head...Sorted.
On inspection it was noted that all the seats were pitted and not sealing very weel. So they all got wipped out and replaced with new ones. I was hoping this was the route of my troubles. Alas no.
Had all the injectors checked for spray patterns and mixture, co , etc all checked and they were not very good.
So now has a full set of new injectors fitted, still did not drive right...DOH!
Took the metering head off as it appeared to be running rough on cold and low revs upwards on demand. Quite a simple bit of kit they used back then so all moving parts removed and checked. They were rusty as!
At this point a new cold start vavle was fitted to ensure start up runnings would be sweet.
Started to search for a new metering head as it also looked like my one was from a FORD set up. This took a while.
I eventually tracked one down that was quite local to me and owned by a rather handy lad with a tasty Scirocco with hybrid Audi block and VW head, and a 16V Mk1 Golf in his collection.
So the new metering head was fitted to solve the problem...Ooops, still ran crap!
There was poor fuel pressure now reaching the actual metering head. So a new fuel pump was ordered up and fitted.
Hey Presto, sweet as a nut!!!
So the moral of the story is that if your filler neck goes and you get nasty old water in your fuel system, then you could end up with more than a new fuel filer on your christmas list!
Just thought I would share the above with anyone in case they have the same hassle as me.
