Title: 27mm HEX bit, 1/2" fitting = Rocking Horse Poo!
Post by: Ali-Mk2 on 27 June 2006, 15:58
I've been looking all over, including screwfix.com and a 6 mile walk all around the area's tool shops, and I can't find one of these things for love nor money! Well, except the 45 quid one place wanted to charge me.  I want to open up the input selector assembly on my gearbox, and also fit the timing hole cover.

Does anyone know where to find one?

I used the end of a big spanner as a kind of screwdriver - they're not in there very tight

Does such a thing as a 27mm nut exist??? If so get one welded on each end of a piece of bar and voila one bodgy tool perfect for the job.

I've tried all the tools I have and kept an eye out for 27mm nuts as well. Nowt.
After 15 years never opened up, anything's gonna be tight...

Having said that, my Bentley manual arrived today and it just might be possible to sort it out from the outside. Doubt it though, given my usual luck with stuff.

Absolute gold dust mate. I also looked all over the place and came up with nowt. Finally managed to get the engineer at uni to make one. He basically had a nut and bolt, welded the two together, then filed each face until each measured 27mm.

If your stuck, I can send mine for you to use - as long as I get it back, as its worth its weight in gold!!!

Let me know.

Thanks Kezza   I'll keep that in mind! I'm still not sure if I'll need it or not because the gearbox in the manual is different to both of mine. Naturally, the bloke who did the Bentley manual has a special tool labelled "US 4463". He says use a bolt and nuts with a wrench "in place of special tool shown"...

Why do you need to open the selector housing?  Check this link out:

He mentions a 'plumbing socket' fits perfectly?

The selector has gone limp, though it can be held in gear, and I'm hoping its just the mechanism in there that makes it "clunk" into gear, not something deep inside.

I've had a look on that site before and I'm just about to go have a look for a plumbing socket that'll fit. I got one out of desperation at the end of my little stroll around the Midlands and it's 27mm on the inside, not the outside. I checked all over the web and it seems the only places selling a proper hex bit for it are in the USA.

I've got a couple of Land Rover wheel nuts welded together for getting them out, they are imperial but a 27mm socket fits them perfectly. Got plenty of spare Land Rover wheel nuts but sure you can find some, they are pence from any Land Rover spares place!!
