Hi, I've been offered a '95 CTi Golf 5dr imported from SA in '98 for £800. Is this a good buy? What's the build quality and corrosion resistance like on these?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

are good cars mate, that red one has done the rounds a bit tho (no offence) it could have bosch or digifant engine in (u got any pics?). they dont have front plastic sh!teguards so worth putting a set of them on and the standard suspension is set high for bad roads and a swine to get off (sealed front legs and one way rear nuts) but do-able (angle grinder). the paint is same as all vw's and its been in a sunnier climate :nerd: apart from that they go well and stop better then standard mk1's (mk2 8v gti master cylinder and servo). all the after market parts are mk1 1.8 gti unless its got digifant engine in) if it has air-con dump it cos its heavy (very) and useless and only takes a few mins. the sports come with better brakes, sturdier arb's (and rear) and better trim, if its tested and for 800 quid i would be tempted. check usual... clutch, eng. temp, if you want to know owt give us a shout,
cheers,
paul

Thanks for the info Paul
Definately KJet, 98k and only 3 owners from new so maybe this isn't the one you're thinking off? Does have aircon but non operational and does sit high like a 4x4!
Still have springs and std ARB's from my old '82 1.6 GTi so might bung them on if I buy it.
Thanks again, Alec

np's mate, they do sit very high due to shocks/springs. sounds a damn good buy if its tested. not sure if 1.6 shocks will fit tho :undecided: the arbs on it are same as gti so wouldnt worry and probably wont need hammeriting  if u dont buy it let me know and ill go have a look. is it in scotland? if u do get it buy a standard fan belt and dump the air con its sh!te and non-rechargable. the only non-uk engine bit is the cam belt tensioner stud but u can use an exhaust manifold stud anyhow. check the clutch, box, headgasket.
cheers,
paul
