is it possible to bump or jump start a car without the starter motor attached?

I apologize in advance if it is a daft question.

yes. Bump start, not jump, bump works by mechanically turning the engine requires no imput from the starter as the wheels get it all turning.

I'm becoming an expert at bumping as mine keeps cutting out when slowing down for lights, etc so if I notice pull out the clutch and it starts again :D
