Title: Has anyone ever........
Post by: Davo13 on 24 June 2006, 23:00
Managed, whilst driving to shake there starter motor out of position?

Parked up went to the the shop came out got in the car tried to start it, nothing.  I thought... another starter motor, but the last one that went gave me plenty of notice.  So I thought i'd have a look under the bonnet, and low and behold the starter motor is hanging out.  What the fu@k I here you say...exactly and there's a flying pig!

To many sleeping policemen around here if you ask me.

I've lost one bolt, the thread on the other is knackered in the middle and the ring/washer type thing in the center of the long spindle thingy is now a little wonky.  If I put this back where it should be do you think it will work?  More to the point if I can get knew bolts to fit the starter motor back on will it work?

What about damage to the cogs in the engine, or any other internal parts?

Will I need to and how will I re-thread the parts of the engine block the starter motor bolts screw into.

This starter motor has been on for about 8 months and when I took the original one off the engine dropped a little.  what damage may have been caused when the engine dropped whilst driving?

Up to now I have manged to fix things that have gone wrong, myself...I may of met my match this time.

Any tips ideas, inspiration is greatly appreciated.

For the record it is a MK 2 1990 8v GTI

sounds like whoever fitted it didn't do a very good job. those bolts are partly responcible for securing the engine into the car.

if the threads are dodgey you should replace the bolt :)

Aye the long bolts go into one of the mounts IIRC> you will need to get new ones and replace the lot. Starters are not expensive and easy to replace. Just need to support the engine.

Where is the best place to get a starter from at a decent price, a company that will post it?

Thanks

As slick says the starter mounting bolts thread into the front engine mount bracket, so I'd get another one of those from a scrappy or the wanted forum.  Check out the front mount too, perhaps it's loose/damaged and is the cause of the bolts working themselves loose?
