I'm looking at either getting a gl or a gti depending on the insurance, or maybe a diesel burner for the economy of it, just want any advice from you guys you can offer! Car is to be used as a commute mainly, so nice daily drive and low maintenance, but wouldnt mind enjoying the drive either!!
Cheers,
Tim

theres nothing you'd need to check really, all the problems with mk3's seem to be electrical ( coil pack , relays etc) and easy to fix. i don't like diesels so cant suggest you buy one, but they are more economical ( and smelly and noisy). The Gl can look nice with a bit of work but you dont get the nice (er) interior you get with the gti. I assume you'll be modding it anyway?

Not too many modifications to start, leave it for a couple of moths after I start work!! So needs to be something I can enjoy driving for a good little while without spending too much on it.

Nowt wrong with the GL's interior  the velour type seats in my '93 are well comfy and very adjustable - a world away from the CL I had previously! Plus you can tell the extra few litres in engine size which I was surprised about.
For cheaper insurance purposes I just bought my GL and have been sticking GTI exterior on it... grill, arches etc - looks good! cheepskate aren't I
?
As soon as I get a couple of yrs NCB though I would rather own a GTI.
