hiya all
im sam, im 15 and from shropshire, been thinking about getting a project car for a while now, summat for when im 17 (only 1 1/2 years lol) have also got a moped, 110cc pit bike, goped and my own shed  oh and ive done a course on welding, basic car maintanence, bike maintanence and nearly finished my level 1 gnvq on motor mechanics, not bad for a 15 year old eh?
so when this popped up i had to have a looook  a golf MK2 driver, 1.6 8v, has a carb problem and requrires some welding on the tailgate hence £60 delivered  i then tried to get an insurance quote, and got quoted 2k with mods fully comp, which sounds bad to all you 20+ year olds but its broke down to £50 a week which will be reasonable when i have a job, or who knows maybe ill try and trade for a 1.0/1.3, we'll have to see...
if all goes well im getting her tomorrow:

Welcome.
The Mk2 is a great first car, mine was a 1.8 GL. They're great fun to drive even as standard.
Talk to some of the insurance specialists, they might be able to help get a lower quote, cos insuring a Modded car aged 17 will be a challenge, but try the specialists like HIC (you get 10% for being a member here) or Adrian Flux, or Brentacre, or Greenlight.
You've got plenty of time to get the car on the road anyway, so enjoy.

Hello mate, welcome to the site!!
looks much better than my first car (a beige 1982 998cc Metro! )
but try the specialists like HIC (you get 10% for being a member here)
^^Sorry have to be at least 19 to get insurance with us

cheers all for the welcome
insurance wise im slowly thinking ill end up selling this and getting a smaller engined golf, unless i can get a better quote, while it will be affordable its still a fair bit of cash  plus the 2k quote is fully comp but i dont reckon id claim if i crashed anyway as it would be even more renewal time
anyhoow we shall have to see, i think im gonna start with a system anyway, and ill just whack all the standard parts back on if i sell/trade :smug:
cheers all

tbh matey at your age (or when you turn 17 i mean) there in not really any point going Comprehensive, you said you paid £60 for the car so you we be paying out £2k to get back £60 in the event of a claim.....you may as well just get it TPFT as cheap as possible then just buy another one if you do have a claim.

Welcome to the forum hun

hello and welcome
with adrian flux i think you have to be 18 or possibly even 19, i am with them and it costs me (aged 20)best part of £1800 to insure it on my 8 valve GTI tpft. If I were you I would get ur own insurance as soon as possible. I was on my mum/dads insurance for 2 years, i saved the money then but am paying the price now when I went to get my own insurance.
I had a 1.6 driver as my first car, i loved it, only got a GTI coz my first GTI was cheap, it eventually run itself into the ground which is why it was cheap but hey, it was fun whilst it lasted!
