Easy just undo about 10 bolts and the supm drops off, but make sure you drain the sump first

i could end up with oily hair if i dont

I have often wondered this, so that all there is too it.
Surely must be more difficult, what is a worse case scenario as I always seem to get when I do anything to my cars :embarassed:
-
I think the worst case scenario would be Cross-threading the bolts :undecided:
gonna head down to VW tomorrow and place a big order......
-
How about getting 9 of the 10 bolts out and then that last one rounds off/head snaps etc... That's what always happens to me!!
-
i changed my gasket once and the 2 bolts near to the box are a right pain in the a$$ and i was soooo close to threading them but luckily i didnt, the gasket still leaked after that which was quite frustrating!!!. so there can be probs mate when taking the sump off be warned
-
cheers, gonna be careful, dont worry (famous last words...
-
Make sure all the nuts and bolts are clean before touching them and don't use cheap tools
-

But yes it's right about using good tools.

Theres a metal cover plate on the back of the gearbox which you can remove, this helps access to the bolts between the engine & gearbox (read, you cant get to em otherwise!) Even then a wobble joint is very handy here!
-
I used a spanner for them
-
Buy yourself some new bolts from VW think it costs about £3 and it stops the leaking after replacing as the bolts rot and let oil trickle through. Use a thin long extension and a 1/4" drive socket to remove.
-
Make sure you torque em up when you put it back on. If memory serves, they are only about 20nm I think, but check it first! It is very easy to over tighten them if you try & pikey it
-
Gonna change my sump gasket, is there anything else i can check/clean while the sumps off?
-
the oil pump. or better still replace it. I replaced the big end bearings on saturday and put a new sump gasket in at the same time in about 2 hours.
the gauze on the oil pickup will get clogged over time and if it gets really bad the pump can fail starving your engine of oil... not good.
there are 2 nuts. 10mm ones. I had to use a 1/4 drive socket to do the ones closest to the gearbox. good old 3/8 drive did the rest.

but thats because you're a chump and used the wrong gasket!! who cares anyway right? got a new toy to play with now!
-
there is a 5-1 odds that i will screw this up somehow....saying that my paint work turned out quite nicely!!!
had a few people comment on how it has turned out better than they thought!

For your information joe it was the right gasket  it was just a rather lame one from GSF which was wafer thin. Damn straight i have a new toy to play with no skimping on crappy GSF gaskets with this car thats for sure!
-
BUY GENUINE STUFF
-
genuine gaskets are sex i know thats sad but compared to gsf etc they are well nice.....
-
Vwspares rubber ones a freakin lush then  :D mind you the original sump had no gasket and I fitted new sump and gasket with new bolts thought it would be a mare but it was a piece of wee!!
-
The bolts right next to the gearbox where a pain in the arse. Before any of you point out the removable plate, it couldn't be done on my engine!
-
aye on the older engines that metal plate is 1 piece!
-
yup, found that out when we had undone a load of bolts
Those two bolts where a proper thingy to remove and get back in....
-
Later MK3s have allen/star bolts, might be an idea to get some if you ever need to do the job again :)
-
Cheers man, i have no plans to take the sump off again in the near future....we did have to force the two bolts in . . . .they may have slightly crossed threaded them, got them to bite though which is all good
-
been there, done that
-
Checked this morning and it has only leaked the smallest drop, whoop
-
as long as they grip f**k it do them up lol we can always re tap them if we take it off again lol

Bollies to re-tapping that f**k*r, would be mucho awkward....would just replace the bottom end with a 2l one if i was to keep the car for ages... ;)
