Title: Altenator?
Post by: kkh120 on 20 June 2006, 17:24
I was having a problem on the 16v with the battery not charging. Put the meter across it and was only getting 9v under load. Replaced with second alt. and still only getting 9v under load.

When I revved to 3.5k suddenly was getting 13.5V.

Put the old one back in to check and got 13.5V at 4K revs.

Do you know why it takes such high revs to get the alt. to start charging the battery?

Should I be looking at something else?

Cheers.

the 2nd alternator could be just as faulty as the first

I would replace the earth strap from the engine to the chassis aswell just as a precaution. having a corroded or worn one can upset loads of things electrical

Do you think the earth strap being eroded could stop the horn from working ??

Any other ideas apart from the earth strap?

Got some help from an electrical retailers who sold me a new reg. with new bushes for a tenner.

Told me to check earth strap and bridge +ive and -ive terminals on the alt. to check if the wiring to the battery light on the dash had corroded a bit. When I did this got 13.5V on idle. Turns out the connector to the dash clocks was loose - not telling the regulator to kick in.

The bloke even took the regulator back!!!!

All in all a good result :D
