Post by: LUNDY on 19 June 2006, 14:49
I am in the process of buying a Sportline Cabrio 80000 miles. The seller has told me there is a knock which comes up the steering column on uneven roads, and he has fiited new bushes not sure where. Cant check out car as it is150 miles away until I go for it
The car is in exceptional cond and I have done a HPI check which shows no recorded accidents and the car looks undamaged underneath, I dont know whether or not to give backword Can you please help ??

grab the wheel & pull it towards you when straight ahead, then after turning a little.
I had play here on my MK2 which was either the UJ or the rack, I never figured out which since I fitted PAS recently which cured it!

doubt it'll be a big problem, worst case it'll need a new rack which iirc isn't that bad on a MK1?  Not like on a MK2 where you have to drop the subframe etc
Tho after only 80k I dont think its gonna be that!

Could be steering column bushes? Otherwise, you can adjust the MK1 rack - for what difference it makes. Mine does same, I had it adjusted (simple nut and bolt tensioner but you need to be doulbe jointed to reach it!) but after a short time the slack was back!

I've now bought a new rack, waiting to be fitted!
