Title: heat problems :(
Post by: sesterfield on 18 June 2006, 09:11
Been driving around my new valver for a couple of days now (very pleased with it  ) however I think there is one slight problem.

Even at night and when not stuck in traffic the temperature gauge is up just above halfway - is this normal?  Because often when I park i notice the fan is continuing to run after I've switched the ignition off.

It's probably nothing but I'm paranoid about it haha!

Cheers

should be about half way or slightly lower really, but its nothing to worry about.  If the light starts flashing you should worry!

Phew thats a relief - my last car (audi coupe) used to sit barely off the bottom of the gauge!

Funny you should mention the light flashing...it came on for 2 flashes while changing gear on the way home from work today...guess it's just a random electrical gremlin

Thanks

maybe the coolant level is down slightly.  Also if the temp sender goes the light flashes and the gauge goes to max, so worth checkin the wirin there :)

Happened again coming home tonight!!  After dropping a gear and overtaking someone the light flashed until I went up a gear even though the MFA said the oil temp was only 88?  Checked the coolant level when I got home and it was fine

I'm probably being paranoid, just wondered if anyone had any more thoughts?

Cheers :)

Cant comment on the light coming on mate but i do know Golf Valves run hot!! I was the same as you, my GTE 16v temp was always low and hardly ever heard the fan cut in but my Golf 16v the fan cuts in alot! Also due to the recent hot weather could be a cause  I would change the coolant mate for a piece of mind

Sounds like its running a bit hot if that's happening at night. My temp guage only goes just above the centre mark when stuck in traffic and then fan cuts in. Sometimes if you park up when its very hot the fan the fan will come on for a while after switching off. If you've got PAS, the PAS belt drives the water pump, if its slipping then that might cause high temperature, also the thermostat might be dodgy. Another thing to check is the ignition timing, if its too advanced that can cause hot running...... Also, a daft question it may seem at this time of the year, but does your heater work well?  :undecided:  After a good run I would expect the oil temp to be between 100 and 116, if you're getting high water temp while the oil temp remains low, that's a bit weird unles you've been driving for less than 15min. It takes about 15min to get the oil properly warm.......

Me again!! haha

Changed the oil + coolant today and am having a bit of trouble bleeding the system - I have put approx 3 litres in but it is up to the maximum mark (the book says the system holds 6.3 litres).  I have followed the procedure for bleeding that is in both the haynes manual and in one of the writeups on this forum but am stumped, as the level doesn't want to go down!!

My dad reckoned that there must have been still coolant in there but this can't be the case since it still overheats after about 5 mins of idling!

Any ideas would be great

Cheers :)

did you take the thermostat out?  If not the block will still be full of coolant :)

No I didn't, thought it was gonna be something stupid

Does that mean that the car shouldn't be too hot at the moment then, since I have in effect only taken part of the coolant out then topped it up?  Or have I misunderstood?
