Title: THE INFAMOUS WINDOW PROBLEM - HELP
Post by: JAKESANGEL on 14 June 2006, 09:32
Help, my passenger window (electric) goes down no problem but coming up is very slow and sometimes just stops altogether. It wont go up automatically either, I have to keep my finger on the switch. When the window is down if i bang on the outside of the door there appears to be a slight rattle sound as well. I have read various comments on the website about "clips", does my symptoms sound familiar or can anyone give me any help or advice. If it is the "clips" I have a mate who can replace them but any idea how much the part(s) will cost.  cheers guys

If your clips had snapped your window would be rattling around in the bottom of your door mate. The motor is possibly on its way out. Also this is the time of year when tree sap, pollen and road dust all like to mix up on your glass and make it harder to push the window past the rubbers. Give the glass and rubbers a bloody good clean to see if it helps... but its more likely the motor.

Cheers mate appreciate it, so if the clips had broken does that mean the window would'nt come up at all ?
cos my still comes up and its level (not at any funny angle) so the motor might be the answer. Cheers

Yeah the motor still works when the clips snap, but the window falls into the door and won't come back up again. I fixed my drivers side one on Saturday, the new metal clips look chunky enough to last a while.

Re: the motor.. I'm not sure if they can be cleaned up or serviced in any way, but they're a doddle to replace.

the window doesnt always drop if the clips have broken... it happened to me on the way home from BVF on the weekend, window went up very slowly (with a clunk)...

i stripped it down and the one plastic clip had sheered and the other had a crack in it !!

window finally closed, but very slowly.

you can get the whole inner skin with runners on for around £70 from the stealers, its easier to change altogether rather than just the clips.

old one

new one fitted

the motor might be knackered but you'll only tell if you open it all up (its not that bad really)...

hope this helps a bit  :undecided:

only slightly related here.....but my rear passenger side window has been knackered for 10months plus. Luckily it stoppd in the fully closed position but then wouldn't move at all, i could hear a click when pressing the controls, but no movement whatsoever. Anyway the other day i pressed the buton by mistake and it worked, it now moves up and down fully on demand, completely fixed. The good lord really does work in mysterious ways !!

CHERRS FOR ALL THE ADVICE, IF IT AINT THE MOTOR IM JUST GONNA REPLACE THE WHOLE LOT AS WELSHGAR SUGGESTED. I KNOW ITS A STUPID QUESTION BUT WHEN I BUY THE WHOLE INNER SKIN WITH THE RUNNERS ARE THE CLIPS STILL GOING TO BE PLASTIC OR ARE THEY THE NEW METAL ONES

the new clips will definately be metal.....

they should last almost forever then, just as it shouldve been made!!

i'll post up that pic later bud.

as promised heres a slightly crap picture of the metal holder for the window....im pointing to where the plastic (metal) clip should be...this then is attached to the runners on the mechanism

if at all confused(i was after reading that back!!) there is a how to guide at the top of the mk4 page... its really good, but where it goes into fitting the clips, all you'll have to do if you have the skin , is swap everything over to the new one and refit.. you'll have to drill out the rivets holding the speaker on, and replace with some 5mm nut and bolts.... does the same job (thats if you havent got a riviter!!)

1hr job max........ VW will charge in excess of £150...

good luck and let us know how you get on bud

I've got this problem too on my passenger side. The window hasn't dropped but it's very slow to shut and is slightly on the piss. Do people think that my clips could be cracked and not completely broken? If I have to change the whole inner skin of the door is it worth getting one from GSF or the stealership?

its quite likely that the clips have gone but you never truely know until you open it all up!!
it could be a simple fix like the window has shifted due to the hot weather etc...

as for where to get a skin from mate, i got mine from the stealers (cos a mate works there ) and they cost £70 + vat..... i dont know how much they are from GSF etc although i know that they do the clip repair kit there (£30+vat).....

i know its cheaper to get the kit but ive been told its a bit of a pig of a job to do. with the skin its very easy....although like me, when taking the passenger side off i had to loosen the door lock off (8mm spline bolt) inorder to get at the wiring clip, once that was done it was easy

id take it apart and have a look first if i was you....it could be a simple fix  :undecided:
