Title: what is the stuff called under the carpet?

could anyone tell me what the stuff under the carpet is called and where could i get it? i think it is used for sound proofing. i need it as i have ripped out the old carpet and replacing it with a checker plate floor and have throw the stuff away only to realize that i need it.

I think what you're after is underlay - you can get it from any carpet shop, I happen to know that Allied Carpets are Duralay's (UK's largest Manufacturer) biggest customer and i think they do the best prices - I used to pay the bill - about £700,000.00 a month  :shocked:

I'd look for some dense foam. that's what BMW's use and they're ultra quiet on the motorways.

Actually some of the stuff for laminate floor is sound deadening too

If you go to a good car audio place they should rolls of sound proofing material

that's called dynamat. there is a cheaper version called phat mat which is prety much exactly the same stuff.

I didnt mean Dynamat I meant the rolls that are like thick carpet and can be used under the carpet as soundproofing and underlay
