I dont want to start an arguement or a big dibate as this question often does!!! But here goes.
What is the chosen oil by members of this site for there mk4 golf 20v turbo's?
Ive only had the car a month & am taking it to big boys toys in thurrock for a revo re-map but wanted to give it a good service before hand.
Also would i be right in saying (correct me if im wrong) that V-DUB recommend 5w-30w???
Thanks James.

synta silver every time. every 5000 miles in the mk4 and every 2000 in the rallye.
-
What grade synta silver & where would i get it??
Sorry to sound dumb but just moved over from the ford side & still learning
-
my lasses 20v turbo bora has some sort of long life service, every 10k miles i think, just ask at the v-dub stearlership. think is castrol 5-30 oil fully synth!
-
Yea might just get it from v-dubs
-
I always used to use synta silver or gold, you can get it from the dealers
-
Thanks for the reply's
-
Synta Silver defo!
VAG or GSF sell it :)
-
Surely you would need synta gold for a 20v turbo?
-
nope. silver is good stuff. the only car I've ever used gold in was an M3 when we did a Inspection 2 service...
-
Got to disagree there.
VW recommend synta gold for a vr6 not synta silver, i can't see a 1.8T being any different???
-
We use Mobil 1 racing oil on all 6 of our race cars. 3 of them being dry sumped set ups.
I know of people that are sponsored by other oil companies, but secretly use Mobil1 as there only real option!
We have many customers that have high performance road cars, that also get some serious track day action, we consider it a must to run on this oil.
Just a couple of things to consider, I'm sure that the VW approved oil is very good stuff, and is more than adequate for road use, but is it designed to cope with the excessive temps that a race track may throw at it, does your car have a high capacity-high flow oil cooler! how about a few seconds of zero oil pressure on a long sweeping bend, while on full chat! and also your mileage!
Your best bet is to get on the phone, or email some race engine builders, their's loads out there! and ask what they would reccomend

Thanks tom but what grade mobile 1? I used to use mobile 1 motorsport in my cosworth (15w-50w) that was the only stuff i ever used for that.

Silver is better for turbo/superchargers.. or so i was told.

Might give jim at racepower a ring see what he uses on his?

I've got a bottle of each in the garage.
They both say suitable for use on turbo/superchargers.
Even so i would use the gold if you are gonna rev the tits off of it, and i expect most people do

Gonna go for the synta gold i think did someone say its available a the main dealers?
-
James, 15/50 would be fine I'm sure.. this post came up in conversation at lunch time today, everyone agreed on Mobil1, and the general opinion was why bother with anything else, if youve used it in your Cossie, then I would say "Keep the faith!"
