Hi,
I am looking at buying a 1991 Golf Clipper convertible this week, I don't know a great deal about Golfs so I need some advice on what it's worth and what to look for when I view it.
It's a 1991 in blue with 91k miles, FSH, new hood, new tonneau cover, 12 months MOT, it looks in great condition and has no rust that I can see so my question is what should I look for and roughly how much would it be worth?
Thanks in advance!

First of all welcome to the site. Have a look in the childboard of this section (mk1 maintenance) as there are a few threads in there, but this is probably the one that will help you the most. --> http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=18122.0
It really is hard to price cabs up as they go for as mush as people are willing to pay, I'd say stick up a description and a price and people will give their opinions as to how much they think it's worth. But at the end of the day if you think it's a good deal and are willing to pay the asking price then go for it.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I would be swapping it for my car (P-plate Alfa GTV), the guy values it at £2500 which is slightly less than the Alfa is worth but it looks great and I'm willing to take a slight loss just want to know if it's really worth the £2500 as I don't want to lose too much.
It's an auto in clipper 1.8L in blue, just had a major service, new tyres, cam belt etc, 95% VW history and it looks immaculate. Does that sound like a fair price?
What do you think?
Cheers,
Dan

If you want my personal opinion then I think that it's on the slightly high side, I'm not sure that autos sell particularly well on mk1s anyway so that may be a problem with a future sale.  :undecided: The only reason I would buy a Clipper would be for insurance purposes only, otherwise I'd buy a GTI every time, but I'm guessing that as you already drive an Alfa GTV that insurance isn't the issue here. You might need to read through the garage section of this site as Clippers seem to have issues with the Pierburg carb.
On the other hand, if it's had a major service with cambelt (make sure you have some proof), new tyres and it looks immaculate then you're set for about 12 months pain free motoring, so if you imagine you're saving a few £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£s with the work recently done then it might just be a good deal. I've seen Clippers go for a lot less than 2.5k but I've also seen them going for 3k+.
The above is my opinion and I'd say that if you're happy with the deal then go for it. A quick look on ebay shows a load of Clippers for sale --> http://motors.search.ebay.co.uk/clipper_Volkswagen_W0QQa38ZQ2d24QQa39ZQ2d24QQa41ZQ2d24QQa6ZQ2d24QQa85ZQ2d24QQalistZa39Q2ca41Q2ca6Q2ca85Q2ca38Q2ca3801QQbsZSearchQQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfgtpZQQfposZPostcodeQQfromZR2QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQga10244Z10425QQgcsZ13QQlopgZQQpf_queryZclipperQQpfidZ1150QQpfmodeZ1QQreqtypeZ2QQsacatZ9873QQsadisZ200QQsaprchiZQQsaprcloZQQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ3QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZunknown
Most a lot less than 2.5k but there are a couple over, there's a red one (auto) with a buy it now of 3.5k and there's a blue one for £2695 with only 38k on the clock (auto again). So there are cheaper out there, but if they need work doing on them then it may be cheaper to get the one you're looking at.
Don't know how much help I've been, but the upshot of it is if you're happy with the deal, go for it.

Take a look at the cabby buyers guide on our site www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk
Cracking bit of info with lots of colour pics!

a friend has a red G plate cab with red seats and red carpet. there's 1 small spot of rust on the body, but the rest is VGC.
He said the other day if someone offered £1600 he'd sell it.

I have a 1983 1800 GLi. Before I bought it I tried a clipper auto and to be honest it was awful even though it was immaculate and low miles. The carbed engine and autobox made it feel like a totally diferent car to the GLi.
Sorry, but I just would not buy an auto.

I would say check out the link Gibby has sent you and this link - http://www.vwgolfmk1.info/main/Buyingacab.pdf
you are buying a mk1 golf cab at a time of year which most people will start putting cab prices up, so make sure if you are buying a cab over 2k its MINT and will not require alot of money spent on it, or else you want to push the price down alot...
If you want to understand the spec of cabs - then have a look at this site as it covers the different models off well from engine, outside spec, inside spec, how to guides, maintenance, issues etc.

hope this helps. Saying that I can be bought for a small fee for reviewing cabs, with want to be customers to make sure they all area's are covered before buying a car.....

So still in the market, will hopefully have one soon!
