Title: Flat out in a 16v
Post by: Daz... on 12 December 2003, 17:28
Hello to all!

I'm sure that there's someone else here that has had their 16v flat out.
I've done mine and want to know what it's like compared to others.
Mine was reading 136 on the clock ;)

I was racing punto hgt at the time and went past him with mine readin 136. He reckons his was 135 so I just wondered which one was wrong!
I've give up with it at the moment though cos I got pulled over doing 110 and have got a date with the court on the 22nd  :'(

I did get about 136mph out of my valver a few years back. Its just not worth it anymore as the PIGS are everywhere.
Its ok to drive at 2 foot away from the car infront when doing 70mph. But if you break the speed limit then you will get hammered.

It's not all bad, I'm gonna get it mint before I put it back on the road.
How long do you think the ban will be? ???

Bastads. What tends to happen to me is I drive all slow and normal then think lets have a bit of speed, get round the next corner and ello babylon (old bill). Either that or I realise I am being followed.

My golf gti 16v mark 2 was unbeatable, I beat Astra 16v's, Escorts rs turbo, etc etc. Dunno if the previous owner modified the engine but it was like sh!t of a shovel.

130 out of an 8v :o
What engine was it and what mods?
Title: Re:Flat out in a 16v
Post by: Dizzie on 14 December 2003, 16:50
'87 k-jet ;D
no one know what's been done to it but it's the fastest 8v most people have driven. there's a piper cams sticker on the slam panel. but no idea what cam is actually in there. it revs off the clock and really picks up at 4500 and powers all the way to 6000 which is strange for a 8v.

standard exhaust and air filter with power roar pipe, but I did 130 before fitting that. makes no diff, just looks nicer.

I have a 16v in a mk1 and the speedo only reads up to 120 :(. But the needle goes all the way round and gets stuck on the post for the trip reset ;D. (On my private test track of course ;))

I managed to get the needle on my h plate 16V to 140 a couple of times (took a couple of miles on empty dual carriage way with the pedal hard to the floor though). Was on my own the first time, second time I had mates in the car who hadn't believed me and was astonished to see the needle reach 140 again with four of us in it!

Managed to get 100mph in 4th gear.  Yet to try 5th,  I too also live miles from the nearest duel carriage way..

i got to 104 miles an hour in my 1.3 mk2 :) on the motorway at 2am (had to slow down becos it felt like it was about to explode!)... i luv the motorway late at night, just the old truckers to watch out for, and ofcourse the cops, but u only have to slow down at the turnoffs and overhead crossings... still, i live in the countryside so i can thrash my heap around the lanes which is wicked, and no one i drive with has a quicker car than me, which is wat i luv about my golf, its really quick, and it makes a awesome whistle when it accelerates, and its cheap to insure!! (im only 17!)

errmm, ok.  As i said before, i live 1 hours drive from the nearest duel carriage
way,  so max speeds are a little hard to acheive!
There is a relatively straight piece of road quite near, where i have hit a (measily?) 110mph.
However, the said road aint exactly flat so you do start to float/bounce a bit at high speed.  + it goes straight into a 40mph zone village, where the pigs could be, unlikely - but possible.

Also to do these speeds i have to do it in the dark which makes it even more sketchy!

I hear you say 'the dark?  chicken sh!t!'
But honestly this is little more than a B road between two villages.
No cats eyes or white lines!

Anyway i'll give 110 in 4th a go sometime.  I haven't got a chance of maxing out in fifth tho.

Anyway I love my golf when 60 on a muddy backlane gives a almost legal buzz!!! ;) ;)

I get much more of a buzz doing a good speed round a set of tricky
bends, than I do from flat out in a straight line!!! ;)

8v gearboxes are only geared to 59.8mph - speedo inaccuracy

They sure do, one of the things you really notice about the 16v's is that extra 1000 rpm, really makes a difference :)

Getting modding on the 8v, if you've already got a filter and exhaust then get a cam as well. Quite cheap if you look around.

what sort of a price are we talkin here?
and is it a relatively easy DIY job?

any other bits needed apart from the cam?

Get a fast road cam for about 150 quid. Probably good to change the tappets as well, about another 100 quid.
If you are doing the cam belt, then do it at the same time.

Hello all, I haven't been online in a while. Got court on Monday to find out how long my beloved 16v will be off the road. As for the fourth gear debate I was doing 110 in fourth when I got poulled over and it wasn't in the red. :P
