My rear wiper seems to have a mind of its own. Every so often (probably 1 in 10) when I start my GTI up the rear wiper does about 5 sweeps. I know this happens if you've got the front wipers on and you select reverse but this happens when the front wipers aren't on and the car is in neutral. I thought i might be catching the stalk and switching on the wipers when i got out causing them to come on when the ignition is swithed on but this isn't the case.
Anyone had anything similar???
-
Yep, suffered a similar problem today, started the GTI and the rear wiper came on too, only way I could stop it was to switch the ignition off, turned the ignition back on and the wiper didn't come on, strange or what.
-
My missus said that too and I thought she was being a dizzy bird!
-
Mine does the same! weird and often i put it down to me touching the switch on turning the ignition...... VW gremlins are more likely
-
Mine has a mind of its own... I just put it down to my ignorance of the controls even though I have read the manual cover-to-cover
-
IS IT ALLWAYS WHEN USING REVERSE AS I HAVE A THEORY.................................................?
Let me know.
My better half says its only when she puts the car into reverse after starting it - is this the case with everyone else?
-
Not for me, but then you have to go past reverse to get to drive with the DSG!!!
I think I know what your thinking Doc, if the switch for the front wipers is on auto and then you skip through reverse it COULD have a signal to wipe???
I've not been using the golf in this recent haot spell but have started my own mini test, i'll let you know what I conclude........
The Boxster just feels soooooo good in this weather
-
I had the same thought and I've experimented and it happens before i put it into any gear.
-
Close Matty I think it could be a combination of auto wipers and the self park function.
If you watch your front wipers when you park up and switch your ignition off, the wipers "twitch" once in a while - The same thing happens when starting the car - not all of the time but start watching your front wipers when you start / stop your car and see if they do this.
This is the automatic self-park system. this is pretty rare at the moment in "normal cars" - basically if your wipers are on and you turn the ignition off the wipers will park at the bottom - unlike most cars where the wipers stay where they are when you turn the ignition off.
If the front wipers are "twitching" whilst you engage reverse the rear wiper should activate its self as it thinks the front wipers are on.
Just a theory...............
Let me know if your cars are doing the same OR if it is linked to having the wipers on AUTO.

My GTI has just developed the rear wiper problem - COULDN'T TURN THE DAMN THING OFF ALL DAY!
Tried restarting the engine etc, turning the wipers off (doh) and everything.
Its well and truly fubar.

I like your thinking Doc, I'll get checking it out.............
-
Mines going in tomorrow for the rear wiper fixing - lets hope it gets sorted - anyone lese made any progress with this?
S>
-
Nope...useless...said if it didnt show up as a fault on the computer there was nothing they could do. It's been doing this for a year now...but of course never does it when I leave it in...very annoying.
-
Doc, I like your thinking.......... I'll check some more things out and let you know what I find...........
-
Got it sorted - rear wiper motor replaced.
But they reckon they couldnt find the rattle in my drivers door - even though it does it every time you shut the damn thing... doh.

Any news?????????????????????????????
-
The editor of Top Gear mag mentioned this problem in the latest issue as he has a GTI on long term test. (it's the issue with the new Ferrari 599? on the front)
-
Mines not done for a while now????????? Confused or what? :undecided:
-
As the Doc says, mine only seems to do it when reversing- maybe that is meant to happen as you need to have ba good rear view when reversing and maybe there is a general problem with the rear wiper also which confuses the issue. At any rate, I don't care as I am part-exing it next year hopefully.
-
As long as your GTI goes FAST ....  thats the main thing...
-
I have spent a good two months thinking that I am being stupid or that I have left the wiper switch in some sort of semi automatic, do whatever it wants secret mode! Finally I checked the forums and realised that it was actually a fault. I have booked my baby in to have this looked at but speaking to them on the phone, it seems clear that they have no clue what the problem is... I'll let you know how it goes..............

Noticed recently that the rear wiper is acting up on my 05 GTI. Much like the posts above it seems to
have mind of its own .It either comes on of its own accord & wont switch off unless I turn off the ignition or wont come on at all. Did anyone, with this problem, manage to find a solution ??

I think this was/is quite a common problem on earlier GTi's. The solution was/is a new wiper motor I believe.
-
Jonny, thanks for quick response . When I have some time I will put myself at the dealers mercy for a fix !!
-
Had my rear wiper motor changed under warranty for this fault a couple of months ago.
-
Thanks mb, Has the new wiper motor sorted the problem ?
-
Yep, the wiper only works now when I operate the stalk!
First time it went in they said there was a fault with the wiper stalk, so replaced that. The fault returned in a couple of days. Luckily the second time it went in the service guy had heard of the problem and said to me it would be a motor change.
-
Thanks . My car is not under warranty so I'd like to get it fixed first go & without the dealers replacing every part aft
of the front bumper !

Correct. New motor needed, under warranty, dealer fix. if only an 05, then oh dear :undecided:
-
Having the same problem (on an 05 GTI) so out of warranty too....anyone got a rough price of how much a new rear wiper motor would be?
