Whilst covering the 600 miles the car sounded like a tractor and covered everyone in soot.  Figured it out yet?

Yuppers.  Lightweight mk2 shell, no air con, staying off boost and 70mph around the 1800rpm mark.

 cant be bad, about 200bhp isnt it?

Yeah, haven't rolling roaded it yet but other remapped PD 150s average around 200bhp/300lbs...so I'd guess mine is around the same.  If only it didn't sound like a tractor.

Post by: Uruk Hai on 08 June 2006, 15:58
I think thats pretty good mate getting that amount of miles out of a tank, I'll have to see what I can get out of mine. How far did you let the needle go down and how much did you get in it when you filled her back up ?
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: martinb on 08 June 2006, 16:03
yeah tell me about it mate, not best pleased!

would a G60 clutch fit?

Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: JMallows on 08 June 2006, 22:33
Mine has just done 320 miles on around 40 litres, which is almost a full tank! Thats around 36mpg, so happy enough. Thats mostly long journeys though, one 200 mile journey, so could be better. I tend to get a little under 30mpg on short trips
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: mix on 09 June 2006, 10:48
i can never afford a full tank :(
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: GemGTI on 09 June 2006, 12:29
250 in my mk1 if I'm lucky! Not at the moment though...
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Agreeable Slick on 09 June 2006, 12:35
i know it costs me 58quid to fill it. about 300 miles to a tank. ISH if i stay off the go pedal long enough.

Oh and martin i don't think they will, something to do with the spline and size.
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....

 Wish i got that much outta my tank most i've done so far in my valver is about 200 miles!  Done 600 miles in my tractor mk 2 though  :smug:
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 10 June 2006, 16:10
I very rarely put a full tank in but I had some money burning a hole on my pocket and only put a full tank in to see how much I could get. Might see if I can beat that when I get paid and go for 400 miles!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Mr Blue on 11 June 2006, 23:01
i get about 250 to a tank.

anyone tried acetone yet?
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Mk2Kezza on 12 June 2006, 18:40
How the hell are you getting 400 miles to a tank?? I've recently changed my 5th gear cog to one from a driver for better motorway crusing but i'm still only getting around 370 miles. However, that is averaging 80-85 mph and thats compared to the 300 I was getting, so it is an improvement.

Now I get

70 mph = 41 mph
85 mph = 36 mph
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 12 June 2006, 22:00
i dunno, i tend to get anywhere between 30-38 mpg round town, depending how light I am with my right foot, and on the motorway I get 41-43mpg. but that full tank wasnt used on the motorway at all.
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: mix on 12 June 2006, 22:23
put in a full tank today...will let you knwo how much i get...would tell you about the MGP but i havent got a clue what is up with my MFA
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: JMallows on 13 June 2006, 11:34
You dont need the MFA to calculate the mpg! Simply fill the tank - right to the top. Drive around, and use up whatever fuel you want. Make of a note of the total mileage done on the full tank, then refill it to the same level - this is why it needs to be full, then you can see the fuel at the top of the filler neck. Make of the note of the litres you put in, then MPG is simply the miles you did divided by the litres x 0.2200. That will convert litres to gallons.

Easy as pie. Only difficult bit is filling it up to the same level, but its not too much of an issue, as a little bit wont make a lot of difference :)
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 13 June 2006, 11:47
on that basis I got 38mpg as an average, not too bad I dnt think!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: JMallows on 13 June 2006, 13:24
I seem to get around 27 on a short 3mile trip in the cold winter mornings, mostly uphill, with foot on floor in third  On a 200 mile trip home, it tends to get around 36-39, which i think is fair.

Hopefully when i get my 8V, it will be similar to what i already have - i hope for better, but not sure of that is too optimistic?!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 13 June 2006, 14:03
of its a digifant it should be better, My MPG is poor in a morning according to the MFA anyway but I only tickle the throttle with it being cold still, up until about 70 degrees oil temp
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: JMallows on 13 June 2006, 14:06
I'm not sure which it will be, did they change it with the 88spec golfs, or with the 90 spec golfs? The one i'm after is an 88 spec, Its an F reg 1989 i think.
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 13 June 2006, 14:09
Digi came into play in mid-late 87 so if its an 88 or 89 then its digi.
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: JMallows on 13 June 2006, 14:17
I thought as much...

Cheers :)

Have you driven both did and k-jet? If so, is there any real difference?!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 13 June 2006, 14:20
I have got a Digi 8 valve and a 16v Kjet, so in a way yes. The Kjet is more responsive, seems to be a bit of lag sometimes with digi, but its more efficient thus being better on fuel as its measured as apposed to being tap on tap off sort of thing. But in terms of the way they behave I cant notice a lot of difference really, both are good.

I get tetchy around the red line, never lower.
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 17 July 2006, 00:17
Unless I have got money which isnt usually very often mine is never out of the red, gets to the quarter way mark peak unless I am going somewhere far where I will put a lot of fuel in it!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Noggin on 18 July 2006, 13:05
Usually let mine go to the end of the red depending how close to pay day

But have just got 412 to the last tank
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: ghost8 on 19 July 2006, 10:47
so
I'm gonna do this for the experiment, never let it get  this low before -  needle on the bad side of the white line - and tbh I don't like it.
Gonna go an fill completely - oh noes, I just see fillet steaks dissappearing down the tube -
and try, well I will, to drive at a steady revvage mebbe around 3300 rpm on motorway and just over tickover in town. No a/c running  and no windows open -  cause drag
It's been interesting reading your mpg's and I'm sorry but the male ego needs constantly to compare and I'm only a bloke after all!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....

you have aircon in your mark 2??!?!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: ghost8 on 19 July 2006, 20:50
nope, is why I can't turn it on
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 19 July 2006, 22:51
ah i c, what do you reckon is worst having aircon on windows down to drain fuel? i have always wondered this!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: ghost8 on 19 July 2006, 23:11
programme called mythbusters did this some time ago
they got two identical ' s.u.v.'s ' ( americana)  drained em,  weighed em then re filled em with exact amounts of jungle.
they went round a circuit - a nascar track I think -  at exact same speeds for something like 7 hours, one had windows up and ac on, the other no ac and windows down.

any guess' which had the most legs

the windows down went furthest hands down!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 19 July 2006, 23:25
I thought that might be the case. My mate hired a car in tenerife last year (fiesta zetec 1.25 thingy) and said to overtake they had to turn the aircon off sometimes as it struggled!
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: ghost8 on 19 July 2006, 23:38
so exactly how / why does this happen,  what is it a voltage thing?
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: Neaty on 19 July 2006, 23:47
coz the aircon pump for it is like a power steering pump and is run off the main pulley like an alternator sort of thing ( i think) so drains the power as the car has to work twice as hard to generate enough power to run it. if you follow, so when the aircon is on it sacrificial to the power output. I am no mechanic by any means but I think thats how it works.
Title: Re: Full tank of fuel....
Post by: mix on 20 July 2006, 11:04
so exactly how / why does this happen, what is it a voltage thing?

Basically, the engine produces all the power the car needs, most of which goes into moving the car down the road....But if you switch on an auxilary, some of the power from the engine is diverted to running the auxilary (in aircon case it is the compressor that is required to run) so you lose some of the car ability to move.

Basically, the more power you divert from the engine into runnign extras, the slower the car will become...
