Absolutely wounded!! I've recently bought a 1985 GTI, 2 weeks after i got her the head gasket went and when removing the head to get it skimmed I noticed that i'd also blew a hole in one of the pistons!  :cry:
Now i've been offered a repacement engine really cheap but it's a 1990 PB digifant engine whereas mine's a KR K-jet engine. Are they basically the same engine and can I easily use this replacement if I take the bits of my original engine as necessary or will I have to source an early KR engine?
Got a few pics of her here, will try and get a pic of the piston up soon:

I will be corrected if i am wrong i'm sure but.... I think the bottom end from the pb engine will drop straight onto your recently reskimmed kr head.
-
I have no idea about engines.. but thought i would say thats you have a nice looking golf.... apart from the wart on the bonnet.

I hope so, I've got a mechanic to do the engine swap next week and he said he's got some experience with Golf's too so should be able to work with what i've got if what you've said is correct.
@Tanks, cheers bro, she is a quality little car and is proper clean, know what you're sayin about the slight blemish on the bonnet but that only adds to her uniqueness I feel.
What actually is the difference betwwen a KR head and a PB head though if anyone can give a quick definition?
-
:nerd: If you're talking about the engine in your picture thats not a KR - its and 8 valve
PB's are 8 valve :undecided: you may be able to fit a KR head on but there's extra oil channels in the 16v that aren't on the 8v

Yeah the Golf in my sig is an '88 Valver but the B reg golf in the initial post in a K-jet 8-valve GTI made in 1985. I understood that the PB head didn't come into use until 1988 on the 8v..

Ahh, hmmmm.... nope i'm confused...
when you say KR are you talking about the engine in the 3rd picture down  thats a k-jet but its not a KR (they're 16v) the PB digifant head will fit the k-jet Bottom End but the injectors are different on the 2 injection systems
I think i should probably step back and let a Mk2 user step in now - digifant is beyond me :embarassed:
-
Cool, so all I would need to do is transfer all the injector system from my K-jet onto the later 8v lump that previously would have had digifant ignition?
-
Throw a 2.0L 8v bottom end on from a MK3 GTI in it, with the k-jet head (like it did) & enjoy the performance increase
-
The K jet is the injection system, the KR is a 1.8l 16v engine I think the 8 valve k-jet and digi were the same barring the injection system. I'd go for a 2l bottom end whilst your at it I think knobby on here has one not sure if he wants rid of it though?

The engine shown in the picture looks to me like an EV which was the code for the early 8v Mk2 Gti's . :nerd:

Nice one, at least I now know i'm looking for a replacement EV head to get ported for a future addition...
