Title: This tops everything!...
Post by: GemGTI on 07 June 2006, 21:31
My engine is f**ked! Took car in about this rattling and shuddering thats been happening lately when car is idle, and it turn out the engine is knackered.  Camshaft and main bearings or something? So all the problems I have had with my car in the past now seem pathetic!

Anyone know where I can get a good mk1 golf 1.6 gti engine?

gutted for you,

still look on the positive, good time for a conversion. a decent 1.8 kjet would be an easy swap and not too expensive..

I would like to keep it original if possible. I don't know. I don't want a big engine. But maybe a newer one. Then hopefully it'll last longer!! Anyone know what engines will go in my car? mk2 1.6gti for example? Or mk3?

If you wanna keep it origional then why not get the bottom end rebuilt. If you can get it off then its only gonna cost a few hundred.

I would get a second garage to review the car and confirm its the same issue.

If it is then I would look in the following locations;

Ebay... (you should of bought that engine I told you about the other week...) which was a VEGE engine - there website is http://www.vege.nl/index2.php?portalID=17 - this is the best engines you can get, I'm looking at there engines myself at the moment...

http://oemparts.co.uk/ - will do a 1.6I engine - best to call them up and find out price

http://www.tsr-performance.com/ - they specialize in all sorts of engine set-ups again best to call them as ask for details (south west of UK)

http://www.bigboystoys-uk.com - they provide engines - I've heard they do good price, but have not heard any feedback on the quality of engines.

http://www.candrenterprises.co.uk - these are the best guys in the business for knowledge and they are in nottingham area - again give them a call for details.

It all comes down to what is really the issue and where you feel happy to get the parts and then somone who can install those parts for you into your car....

did you take the car to Joe to have a look at your issues?

Si

Gutted for you Gem.   You must be the most optomistic dubber ever, no matter what happens to you you just try to get it sorted to keep it on the road so hat off to you.

As for the engine, you could always put a thread on all the forums, but I also like Sellers' idea of a 2ltr 16v, or at least a 1.9 8v.

Rebuild, lighten and balance while you're at it.

Hey Gem, what about this in the for sale section if you want to keep standard, stock mk1 1600 for not much more than a new engine putting in yours  (£1500) ! http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=39124.0 He's only in Preston, take off all the new bits on yours, put on this one, sell some of the other old bits to recoup some cash, jobs a good 'un.

That might not be a bad idea if its a good solid car

no, thats a terrible idea, you can't break that golf, its just not in the vw spirit.

a 1.6 gti or 1.8 gti engine wont be too hard to source

A money pit isn't really living up to the vw name if you ask me - dubs should be cheap to run  :nerd:

Like I said before Gem (when you had the rusty floor) - its really hard making the decision to get rid of your car, its even harder finding a worthy replacement - but you wont look back once you've done it - I did it and i've had 3 years of trouble free motoring

Thanks for all the help guys! Will give it all some thought. Will take it to another garage to make sure. Anyone have any idea how much it would be to get my engine re conditioned? Or it that a bad idea? I don't want to get rid of my car - but if something else bad goes wrong after this I may consider it!

Volkspares/bigboystoys are £469 DIY & £37.50 delivery (no crazy e-bay prices then ) or £699 fitted and come with a 12 month/12000 mile guarantee - I really miss my one  and wouldn't of bothered with the 16v conversion if I still had it (the bl00dy DVLA crushed the car ) - it sounded like a sewing machine

So is that £699 fitted for a re conditioned engine? Or is that how much to get mine re conditioned? Mine sounds like a sewing machine at the monent!
