I have to say I am very impressed with the Mk V GTI. Its diamond black, leather, 3 door with DSG. The DSG is silky smooth and the torque is great, a fantastic all round package of a car! However, had it a few days now and started to pick up a few faults already:
1) 6 CD player not working - No problem VW have ordered a new one for me
2) Steering rack making grinding noises when turning to the left - Yes that old chestnut! No problem... everyone else has had the same issue and VW should replace it... I think.
3) There is a flap on my driver's side bottom Leather seat which seems to have come away from underneath - has a broken plastic bit on the end. Not a major issue and it should get fixed up.
4) Drivers side door does not shut flush and is out of kilter with the lines of the back of the car. Passenger side door is fine. Now..this worries me a bit, can it be simply rectified by VW??
Cheers

TBH Zeb, I would be spitting feathers if I had just paid 20k plus for a car with those things wrong, especially the door!
Why does it not fit? Has the car had a knock??
-
Nope the car hasn't had any knocks it just seems to be a manufacturing defect. Mind you it doesn't casue any wind noise or anything but just looks annoyingly out of line with the rest of the body. I just hope there's a fix for this sort of thing?? Whether it needs realignment by some method or a new door altogether I'm not sure?? Anyone know how this might be dealt with by the boys at VW?
-
FFS
-
My boot was out of alignment with the lights when I bought my Mk5 GTI. I showed the dealers within 2 days as I intend on part-exing and don't want them accusing me of having it accident repaired. If I wasn't going to part-ex it I would have been livid ahving paid £21k + in cash  I was still annoyed though
-
Did the alignment issue get repaired on your boot? I'm scouring the net to find out how bodyshop guys fix these door alignment problems. I'm just hoping it can get fixed and, if not, I wonder if I can demand another car or my money back! I did buy this as an approved used car from VW dealership so I don't know what recourse I may have if they can't fix the door?? I know if it was new factory order I could easily demand another, but the same may not apply for used cars. It still has 2 years warranty left so they can keep trying I guess :undecided:
-
They offered a 'fix' which would be done in-house but then said that it would probably make the situation worse... They said that it may be hard to shut the boot if they went ahead with their proposal... so really they didn't offer anything of substance. If I was planning to keep the car, I would have insisted on a proper resolution but because it isn't very noticeable - one end of the boot sticks out past the rear lights while the other end sits below the rear lights - I couldn't be asked with arguing.
-
Is this common?? Is there a build quality issue with the panels on the MK5??
-
Well, its not the first time I've heard of misaligned door's on the Mk V's. I did read a review by one chap who had both doors misaligned as well as other problems and rather the dealership offering to repair these they simply offered another new car. I have since spoken to a friend who used to be a mechanic and he mentioned that they simply manipulate the door hinges and with a lot of trial and error to put the misalingment right.
Car goes in for the 16th June so we'll see if they can do the trick!

My R32 has its fair share of faults:
Factory:
Drivers wing sits proud of the door - in my opinion the whole wing needs lowering to match properly......
Various parts of the internal door handles had not been put together properly so I fixed the ones I could myself leaving this one that I couldn't do......
Burred screws on the door panels.........
Instrument cluster was squeeking so I removed the ill fitting trim panel to find the clocks had not been screwed in - not just loose but no screws!
Trim for cluster just does not fit properly - I have TRIED a lot!
Dealers:
Various longish scratches on the drivers sill
(http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/4548/dsc031593zk.jpg)
2 Small scratches on the lower O/S/R bumper
(http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/3751/dsc031538ug.jpg)
1 long scrape on the O/S/R exhaust valance
(http://img475.imageshack.us/img475/2792/dsc031546jq.jpg)
1 scuff on lower N/S/R of bumper
(http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/219/dsc031516nk.jpg)
I know the dealers did these as I inspected the car when it landed ie Pre PDI and valet.
I'd get 'em fixed but the dealers just seem to fix one problem and cause another - Case in point my last GTi - The rear parcel shelf was wonky so they fixed it but chipped paint of the rear bumper as they did it!
So now I just live with the faults that dont bother me too much and hope that the next one will be better
If it helps all dealers VW AUDI MERC PORSCHE RALLIART and others seem to be crap in the service area - there simply isn't enough attention to detail.
The funny part is that my van is PERFECT so if you seek VW perfection don't buy a 31k Golf, buy a 15k Caddy!
I still totally love it though
-
JESUS!! I can't believe that you had to put right what the damn manufacturers ought to have done in the first place. Its a bit like this, if you buy Rolex you expect a certain level of quality and 9 times out of ten you get everything perfectly as youwould expect. I know that VW might not be the Rolex of cars but £20 odd grand is a lot of money for a car and you expect everything to be perfect!!
Its a good job your a handy man...some of us are just too plain scared or crap to try out some of the things you have done. I think your right Doc, there isn't enough attention to detail anymore. They just seem to knock them out as quick as they can and hope that some of the faults and imperfections will go unnoticed by buyers like us. I guess the law of averages will dictate that its worth the manufacturer's letting some dud one's pass through hoping that only a few will come back rejected by the customer!
I guess I will have to see if they can make the adjustments to the door enough that it looks better but I accept it may not be perfect. And if they can't do anything for any reason..well..like you say better to live with it if it ain't that bad! I also don't want the burden of selling it in the future and for some smart alek to come along and spot the misalignment and blame it on an accident repair job....when that is not the case. Having said that I'm usually very meticulous when inspecting cars and I didn't spot this misalignment until two weeks later!
-
'kin hell Doc
I would go balistic if my new R32 had anything wrong with it let alone that. I worries me when its obvious that with the amount of cars you have you must obe your local stealers best customer yet they still treat your car like that.
I must admit my Mk4 seems to have aquired a signicant amount of small scratches whilst in the dealers getting serviced and I never even connected the two until your post.
-
Funilly enough................................
And it wasn't scratched!
Tops and bottoms - the service / valeting teams at main dealers DONT GIVE A FLYING FECK  - thats why I chenge 'em all the time - which is OK for me - It saves the pain of further damage - I think about the people following a dream that have spent money they don't have to get them - then they get a car which is sub standard that their stuck with for years - it makes me MAD
-
Well I handed my Mk1 Golf GTI into the local stealer for a service and it came back with a 3 inch long sctrach on the bonnet which I could swear was never there before... its only because it hasn't penetrated the laquer (its diamond silver metallic) that I didn't take it up but they really don't appear to give a sh!t about customers cars.
-
I will be checking my Mk5 GTI Anniversary VERY VERY carefully when it comes next year and will defintely insist on anything wrong being put right. As for those pics of your R32 Doc, they are HORRIFIC  I don't know how you put up with that... that is really shoddy. Reminds me of Lada Riva build quality from the 1980's...
-
Gee thanks (lada)
Illyun - you said "I will be checking my Mk5 GTI Anniversary VERY VERY carefully when it comes next year and will defintely insist on anything wrong being put right"
That would be like mission impossible mate the feckers can't put em' right without causing further problems! Hence I just left it as it was. My GTi never had any faults apart from the rear shelf and I wished I'd left that well alone
I think your right Zeb - they are THROWING them together and letting the dealers pick up the mess!
Hence there comming through faster than normal!
-
Hey nice Rollie - a real classic sub date! Here's mine...(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d19/zeb358/TuxedoRolex.jpg)
-
I aint never seen me one of those......
What is it?
-
Here's my other sub-date (otherwise known as the Kermit) (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d19/zeb358/IMG_0049.jpg)
I gonna get accused of talking off topic!!! Enough on the Rolex I think :smug:
The first one I posted is the new date just (116234) on a tuxedo dial, I'm a bit of a watch entusiast!
-
I prefer Kermit - A lot!
-
I know it will be an uphill battle if there is anything wrong which is why I will give the dealer the hair-blower treatment if anything goes wrong and they botch the repair job or cause other damage... I am planning on keeping the Anniversary for a long long time
-
hair-blower treatment?
-
Yes.. the Alex Ferguson 'hair-blower' treatment
-
Zeb - if you have bought your car from a VW dealership you have 30 days to swap it for another motor - use this as leverage to get it fixed properly.
BUT DON'T LET IT GET PAST 30 DAYS OR YOUR FECKED!!!!!!!
-
Sure thang Doc, but this dealership don't have anything else in their showroom yet, but I'll keep checking right up to the last 30th day. But to be honest I really don't want to go down the road, so I'm really hoping they can just fix my door.
My mate had another look today and noticed that the skin seems to have a little play right where it meets the rubber seal (not the top part of the glass the one at the bottom) so if you push this part of the skin in a bit (about 5mm) all is fine and in line and closes the gap, now I just need a clamp to hold it there!
I'm hoping they can push that bit back in place to close the gap and if there's a screw behind it that might be ok, or it could be a spot weld. Dunno really....
-
It should be an easy fix - If they can't do it then I can at GTi Int. show!
But you cant watch or you'd cry for a week
-
I think that the general fit and finish of VW's since late 90's has been pretty poor. TBH, the Focus seemed better screwed together than the Mk4.
The VW redeems itself with the quality of 'end' materials and styling. But the stuff you don't see, seem poor - especially around the fascia.
or in other words, furr coat and no knickers. It gets away with it coz its such a nice furr coat. Now I just have to summon courage to get a p/x on our A4 avant vs a GTi.
-
Are they allowed to drink beer during their lunch breaks at Wolfsburg... that might explain it.
-
Don't know???
Maybe we should organise a factory tour:
http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/company/wolfsburg
Id be up for it - we could do the Nurberg etc whilst we are there!
-
I am up for that I am on the track in September, with some mates already. We are racing our new tax free go karts, for a bit of fun.
-
Quick progress update. Dropped the car off today and the service manager had no problems letting me know that all of those faults will be put right without any issue, including the door which simply requires realignment. As for the steering rack issue they have already done this for two other customers and will have to order a rack in from Germany if they don't already have one in stock, which could take 3-4months if ordered!
Anyway, at least all will get sorted and my mind is now at ease a little. Just hope they don't muck anything else up while they have the car!
And guess what I got for my loan car - a bloddy Touran - at first I thought the service advisor said Tourag (and I got terribly excited ) but she looked at me thinking why the big grin on my face and then she reiterated "its a people carrier - sorry but that was the only vehicle available today"
-
Another update - service advisor has told me that the steering rack is due to something else and will not need a whole new rack as orignally envisaged - so that's ok. Now..on the misaligned door issue she told me that the technician was aware of this on other 3 door golfs and it seems to be a "problem" only affecting the drivers side door. Anyone else have this problem??
Anyway, she told me that this was a design affect and nothing that would be covered by warranty. She was telling me that since other 3 door golfs had the same that perhaps I could accept this as design feature.
YEAH RIGHT  I told her that the door being misaligned is not a design feature or something but rather a design fault. She said that it wasn't anything they could do becasue of they did any adjustments the rest of the door would go out of kilter.
I told them that this was unacceptable and that as it was a quality issue and that I would seek a refund of my money or an exchange if the door cannot be put right. At that point the service advisor admitted that she would not like it if she had spent £22K on a GTI to find that problem with the door and said that she would ask bodyshop to have a look at it instead.
I wrote a long email to the sales manager who sold me that car threatening to seek an exchange if the door could not be put right etc...and he wrote back to say that his very best technician is investigating the door and that he is good at dealing with difficult and "sensitive" issues!
I will get an update on Monday to find out what they can do. From what I have seen on the door it appears that the skin has come away from the frame and if you push this back in with your fingers everything seems to align up again. Perhaps some spot welding may be required or something...but who knows..I ain't no bodyshop expert.
I wonder if the same shoddy workmanship on these 3 door golf's is a prevalent problem with other 3 door golf GTI's or other models??
-
I have had no such problem
BUT ask for another car NOW then when one comes in be it 1 month or 1 year they will have to honour the 30 day thingy.
If your car was bought on finance then you can get in touch with them re: quality issues.
Good luck and stand by your guns!

I picked up my new GTI last week, after a very long wait I might add. Drivers side door slightly out of alignment, rattle from above where the Sat Nav sits and that's it. The door was sorted by the dealer as I waited and the rattle went away - although it may return I suppose. The car has now done 300 miles from new, so early days... the hi fi had me worried afer what I'd read on this forum - mines really good! I did have uprated VW speakers fitted in the front and I do have the latest sat nav in my car - apparently they've only recently upgraded the spec of it and I got lucky with my build to get the new version. At any rate - it sounds great and I've just traded my BOSE equiped TT for the GTI - the sound quality of my new VW is just a good as the Audi was. So, I'm a happy bunny with my new GTI
-
I HAVE HAD MY GOLF GTI FOR ALMOST AYEAR KNOW,I NOTICED MY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR DOES NOT MATCH UP CORRECTLY AND MINE IS A 5 DOOR , BUT DOES NOT BOTHER ME THAT MUCH. THE ONLY OTHER NIGGLES I HAVE HAD ARE A NEW WINSCREEN WASHER PUMP MOTOR FITTED , EVERYTHING ELSE BEEN SPOT ON. THE ONLY THING THAT BUGS ME IS THE MILEAGE IAM GETTING ON MY GTI COMPARED TO MY OLD GOLF GTDI 150 BUT THAT EXTRA MONEY SPENT IS WELL WORTH IT WHEN IT PUTS THAT SMILE ON YOUR FACE.
-
I noticed my passenger door slightly out of alignment...was about to make a fuss about it, when I looked at a few more 3dr GTIs they had waiting for collection...and none of them had perfect alignment on the doors!...have to say some of the panel gaps are pretty bad on some cars...mine is much better than some..so I shouldn't get too annoyed..so much for laser alignment that the factory supposedly uses..
I'll let them maybe have a go at correcting it a the first service....if I wanted them all fixed they'd be there all year!
-
great stuff
-
Well my GTI boot was misaligned but doesn't really bother me too much... especially after looking at the pics of Doc's R32 - that looked really bad.
-
Funny you should say that coz it dont bother me too much as my new ones arrives in 10 weeks
-
Finally got my car back yesterday. The CD player is fixed - it wasn't working becasue the previous owner had an ipod connection overriding the CD, so I told the VW guys take the damn thing off as I still like my cd's
The leather seat which had a loose flap at the bottom has been fixed on again.
The steering wheel creaking noise to the left has now been rectified by changing the struts on the mounts.
As for the door they did a pretty good job of closing the hugh canyon and is a marked improvement from before, although still not perfect for a £22K car! But I've seen other 3 door golfs and some have good door alignment and other's are off. It seems to be a bit of hit and miss at the factory when doing the doors!!
Got a full tank of petrol for the inconvience - wow wee! Anyway, all of these niggles should have been put right before the car was presented for sale..so not very professional of VW Martins in Basingstoke, but good after sales service nevertheless. They did get all the issues dealt with in the end..despite the threats over not being able to fix the door casue it was a design feature!!!
Overall happy with the service and so glad I didn't have to go through any rigmour of complaining constantly - which is so exhausting!
-
hey jeb,
brings back memories of my recent experience reading your thread. I had the very same problem on my brand new MK5. The top corner of the drivers door meeting the front wing seemed to tapper out and not line up with the profile of the car. It took the dealer 4 attempts to sort it out and on the final go, it looked good but they actually resprayed the door and wing!!!!
I rejected it because I told them I didn't want and paint work done.
I'm not driving a new replacement which isn't as bad but still has poor door alignment. Sadly I've come to accept this as all MK5 golfs as you say are hit and miss with the door alignment.
-
haveing worked in large body shop for 15 years ican safely say
mk5 golf doors are a pain in the arse to line up for a start the door skins
are bolted to the door inner frame but the parts that bolts to the inner frame are
bonded to the door skin so lineing up doors takes alot of time and if your
local vw dealer does not have a body shop your trusting your car to a
load of mecahnics who may not have any bodywork training
-
I got my driver side wing filled and resprayed from a local repair centre (vw asking for double =£480 ) the drivers side door i would say is now better aligned that the passengers side.
I had to laugh when the vw bodyshop stated i was taking a risk as the doors are hard to refit.
i think i was lucky
-
scotty, you allowed someone to fill and respray your car in order to fix this problem!
I would never had allowed that.
-
no golfdue, some little ba$£tard threw a large brick at my drivers side wing!!
