Title: NON Turbo engine problem
Post by: Mr Blue on 06 June 2006, 19:15
Can hear a tappety noise thats comming from the top of the block. This is on a NON turbo mk4 gti 1.8 20v.

There is no back pressure and the oil doesnt seem to 'flick' out of the oil cap when running.

Is this normal?

It sounds like its running dry and the oil level is perfect. no coolant / oil mix

Could this be the oil pump. this a common thing?

I'm not familiar with this engine but could it be that your tappets need adjusted or if they are hydraulic, they could be worn or gumed up.

thought it was a clogged oil pump. flushed and changed the oil.

VW specialist said it could be the exhaust manifold but i cant hear an air leaks from the manifold when i do a leak test.

sounds well crap. Looks like 'Goldy the mk4 four' will have to be treated by the pro's
