Title: idling.... please, please help

 i am gutted,  just put me tt wheels on my golf mk3 16v. looks sweet. thanks to people who helped me with the correct tyres!!
but now im getting engine problems.
it doesnt happen all the time though. the car idles as though its ran out of petrol..
its always between 3-4000 revs. my mate says he can smell petrol too (im not sure about this) dont want to believe it. (probably). after 4000 revs its fine????  has anyone had problems like this???? any ideas??  someone has suggested piston rings :'( :'( :'( :'( please please  help...
