Hi all, I have a problem with the front drivers side window, it has stopped working, the passenger window is ok, when you press the button it makes a clicking noise, so I stripped off the door panels so I can investigate, now I noticed the one of the cables that make the window go up and down is very slack and the other one is tight, now I need to get the regulator out but I cant because I need to take the glass out, and I cant take the glass out cos I cant lower the window to slacken off the clamps holding the glass in place!
Has anyone come across this problem before or does anyone know how I can lower my window to enable me to release the clamps and take the glass out??
Many thanks
oh btw its a 97 gti 8v

Hi, I had the same prob, 2 weeks ago. The window on the drivers side got stuck halfway down and wouldn't budge. And then what? it started to pour down for about 10 days . I had to tape a plastic bag over the window for the night cos I have no covered area and it was getting dark. The next day I had to drive down to a local quiet area that had a bridge and I investigated the problem. The runners were not dry. Anyway I managed to get the thing up and it is now stuck in that position. Ive been driving around now about 2 weeks and intend to bottom it this week. I haven't had chance to sort it during this fine weather period cos the good lady wanted a new look to what she calls the courtyard. I,ll keep you posted what I find.

i had this problem on my car ,and it ended up been a broken wire behind the rubber at the front of the door where it goes in to car it just unscrews ,on my car there was 1 broken wire and 2 wires that were ready to break ,not sure if it will work for you but i would have a look as it only takes a couple of minutes.

  Hi
Ive found my problem. Its goosed!!! Stripped all window mechanism down and found that a little yellow end cap that fits over the wire was snapped causing it ride over the little plastic green wire running wheel. ( I hope that makes sense. It reads correct.) Honest we are talking mere pence for the yellow end cap, but it cannot be replaced.
Just sourced a complete window motor and mechanism off good ole ebay. £59 sovs!!!!!! as compared to pence. I could bloody sob. In fact I think I will do.
