Thought id do the oil and filter on my mk3 1.4 but ive never seen an oil filter with a hex nut on the top of the filter (its my first vw so sorry if thats a common thing!!). I tried a set of filter pliers and then tried a socket on the nut thingy but all it did was deform when i applied pressure...
Any ideas?

Just use a proper strap type filter remover, the nut shaped things do just fall to bits unless you use the proper VW tool...

Cheers, i'll get on the case and buy one!!
Does the strap type tool grip better than a chain type coz i used one of those and it just slips (plus its a bugger to hook the chain around the filter!!)

I reckon the nylon webbing ones are pretty good. If that slips you can put a rubber glove (or somehting similar! :lipsrsealed: ) under it and it'll grip...

If I cant get a filter off I just bang a screwdriver through it and use that to twist it, hasnt failed yet!!

I favour the f*ck off big screwdriver everytime!
Mine was an absolute pig! Because of access problems due to the Air-con pipes etc. a screwdriver was the only way!
