Title: How do I change key in the fob?
Post by: dantis on 02 June 2006, 19:36
Hi everyone, I have a MK4 Golf and the rectangle keyfob was really tatty, sellotape was holding it together!  It worked fine, so I bought a complete fob off eBay which is in really good condition, now I need to know how I can get the keys out of the fobs so that I can change them over, I can't simply split the fob in half and swap them over because it is the top half of my fob that is broken.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not 100% up on this, but I 'think' you have to buy a BLANK fob of ebay, (is that what you've got?), & get the key cut at your local key cutter (if they'll do it, that is).  Then you have to get the immobiliser programmed by somebody with 'VagCom'.

You can program the remote locking yourself, though.

No, I have bought a second hand fob complete and I just need to swap the keys over.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can easily replace just the key blade. :undecided:

Open the switchblade key to the halfway position, look closely at the pivot point and you should see a small hole with a pin inside of it. Your goal is to get that pin out. Once the pin is out, the blade should slide out.

OK, so I managed to get the key blade out and swap it over, great, but when I tried to start the car it just kept stalling and an icon of a key appeared on the dash, so obviously there must be some sort of transponder in the top half of the fob which operates the immobilizer, I swapped them back and it was fine, but now I am back where I started  :undecided:

Any ideas guys?

You need to take the car and the new fob to your vw dealers, and they will programme it for a small fortune, but make sure it is the right frequency first.

If you butcher the 'forward' part of your old key, I suspect that you will find a small black chip in there, I think you should be able to swap this with its equivelent number in your new key.  The black chip is the imobilser transponder and if swapped over should mean that you don't have go near the dealer.  The bugger is is that you will have to take the forward part of your new key apart and I dont know how easy it is to put back together  :undecided:.

May be talking sh!te but I know that this trick works for vauxhalls.  Those keys are a lot easier to take apart though.  Worth taking the old key apart to see if the chip is easy to get at and what reassembly will be like.  HTH.
