You know the routine, new job, long commute - buy a cheap car to run 40 miles each day & if it passes the MoT, great!
So I buy an £80 runner from ebay. Then it stops running....
And I find, I don't want to scrap it after all.... I actually kinda like this golf thingy...
So, I have a '89 1.6 driver with 150k on the clock, looks like it was well maintained until about 3/4 yrs ago. Then it went to hell in a handcart... but I like it, even with the disconnected heater & the swimming pool in the footwell ;o)
Needs a lot of work, but hey, so do I.
Anyways, it now runs again courtesy of a new dizzy cap, wd40, some connectors & a lot of patience, but the engine sounds rattly, really, REALLY, rattly, so I figure the head is shot.
What I need is a good breaker/salvager in the SW/Devon area. I have already ordered a new gearshift connector rod/bushings thingy (those downshifts from 4th to reverse are just sooo much fun!), I need a good (pref low milage) head & oil pump, the new clutch plates I'll get & fit next month.
Any advice on which heads will go on (the phrase low-end budget features heavily here) etc, hell any advice at all appreciated.
This is supposed to be my cheap get to work beater so for the time being I'm looking at keeping it running, legal & safe (in that order ) ;o), rather than doing it up.
For now anyways.
