This may be a stupid question, but how do you check your oil?
I usually go for a run and make sure the engine is up to temp then switch off the engine and check the dipstick.
Is that right or should the level be checked when the engine is cold?

Leave it for about 30 mins, let the oil drain back in the sump then check it on flat ground for a more acurate reading. If your checking it while the engine is hot, all the oil is not in the sump, its still in the engine and the dip stick is showing less then there is.

I wondered why the oil always seemed to be half full, I'll know better next time.
