Just wanted to see what everyone thought about this. On my dash these lights come on when i turn the key without starting
(http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j285/vwbassett/dash.jpg)
The others go out i know the battery and hadbrake should stay on but what about the check engine light below
(http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j285/vwbassett/dash1.jpg)
It goes off once the engine is started is this the correct operation or shouldnt it be on at all if you see what i mean.

dude you stole my dash give it back!
/me takes a shot.
on the first shot the windowsscreen one is for the windscreen washer resevoir, I think it either needs filling up or cleaning out. There is a common fault I read something to do with the float in it, which is best completely changed IIRC.
/me treats you to some petrol lol. On mine when I turn the key without starting the petrol meter shows how much petrol I have in the car no warning light comes on.
in the first pic the first red symbol uis coolant temp i believe ? or engine temp actually. On my car the needle for engine temp would also move to wherever if the engine was warm usually 90oc after 10 minutes of running. Never get a red light on it. Well not yet most likly will now that I jinxed myself
Oil red light is something that never comes on mine. Am sure you have the correct amount of oil in. God knows what these lights are coming on. I would say in my xpeiernce of cars is that you have a haunted car. WHO YA GONNA CALL DA NANA NA GHOSTBUSTERS! Opps sorry. Was watching it thid evenin with my neice kid has no idea about movies wanted to watch finding friggin nemo bah kids.
Abs goes out straight away on mine.
In the second picture I've never seen anything in that display unless my lights on fog lights on that I can remember.
ahh I just noticed in that pic you have half a tank and engine temp is up.
In that second pic on the bottom of the display where it shows the mpg and temp never seen that before how'd you get that to come up ?...
I've problably been of no help here

The only light i was talking bout is that yellow engine check one as all the others go out.
-
All the lights should go off when you start the car, except the hand brake! which will go off once you once you let the hand brake down!
If the engine light stays when the cars on, you need to get a diagnostic kit connected, will tell you whats wrong via a code.
-
Yeah it goes out when started but should it be on in the first place?
-
Yeh its kinda like a system check before the car starts... mine does that anyway!!! its only when the lights stay on u need to worry
-
Ok cheers TAF reason being i looked at a mates 1.6 and 1.4 and they had all the lights except that one so i guess the GTI's are just more advance
-
 I think I misread your post.

read the above topic mate - i'd definitely get it checked out ASAP
-
Just checked mines, inserted the key turn ignition on, lights went on, start the car, ALL lights went off.. As long as the lights are not on when the car is running, i wouldnt be worried!!... like i said only when the light stays on you need to get it checked.
Ps what spec is your car?? 35.3mpg on a gti?!?! mines only does 28-31 ish mpgs!!!
-
Not the proper gti but its the 2.0, mpg is pretty good (25mpg in congestion-45pmg motorways)since the maf, lambda and coolant temp senor been done.
-
how did you get the mpg to show up in that dispay ?
I've never seen it before.

computer display should be standard on the 1.8, 1.8t, 2.0 and gt tdi's

Hey,
Slightly off topic (apols) but on the subject of warning lights I have a light that comes on with the ignition but goes off when the engine is running 'EPC' in the rev counter area. Just wondering what this is, no mention of it in my handbook but I think I was supplied with a handbook for a different year model (handbook refers to ESP buton whereas I just have ASR). Its a late 2000 1.8T.
Thanks,
Ron
