Thinking of servicing the car this weekend, been reading someposts were peeps have changed the oil filter and the car refuses to start.
Any tips and words of advice as best to do this and things not to do, its a 88 16v filter rear of the car laft hand side
cheers
-
u mean fuel filter? :P
Duno mate but i know this post will help me out also
-
errr, what's the question again?
do you want to know how to change the fuel filter?
-
the fuel filter Dizzy rascle.
-
well my car broke down last night and refused to restart, left it 20 mins tried again and it started, been told by a few peeps at work aounds like i had some sort of blockage, as the engine was turning over just not sparking.............. so the sooner i change this filter the better.
what i dont want hapening is unplug thefilter and petrol comes shooting out all over the shop ::)
so any tips and do nots greatly appreciated
-
Its fairly straightforward, do you have a Haynes manual as there is a write up in there?
-
Yep got a haynes manual, all it says un plug the pipes stick new one on , is it really that simple ;D
do i need to fill the new filter with a bit of petrol 1st so the car doesnt struggle starting?
-
Yep it really is that simple.
I don't think there is any need to prime the filter as the pump should manage to get the fuel px back up fairly quickly (I've never done it anyway, I think you're more than likely going to end up with the fuel all over you).
I'll just double check the Bentley and see if that has anything to add. Back in a mo..........
-
Well I would look in my Bentley, only I can't get it to work >:( Worked last time I used it >:( Bloody PC's >:(
-
1) jack her up*
2) undo the bracket holding the filter to the car
3) undo the pipes on both ends of the filter
4) get covered in fuel**
5) bolt the new one on
6) lower off jack
7) start up and check for leaks
*As always when working under the car support with axel stands
**not essential
-
It is sensible to depressurise the fuel system first, ie. turn the engine over with the fuel pump fuse remove. The only other tip i can give you is undo the pipe unions on the filter SLOWLY, with plenty of rag to absorb any petrol that leaks out.
Oh yes and the obvious one, always disconnect the battery negative.

cheers
p.s whats this bentley that everyone look in ?
-
Its a more like a workshop manual.......much more detailed and far more info than the Haynes manual.
-
where can i get this bentley from?
-
I'll upload a page that I produced a while back that tells you where you can get it from for free........but for some reason it didn't work for everyone.
Alternatively you can get it from Amazon:-
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0837603420/ref=pd_sr_ec_ir_b/202-7078205-4242253
-
I like the sound of the free one...........if you can post up the link or the page that would be excellent
cheers
-
Ok, I need to do a little tinkering with my website but I'll endeavour to get the info up for you within the hour.........
-
thats excellent i'll log back on in awhile then
thanks again
-
Sorry, I've been a little delayed, DHL have just delivered the rest of my tools that I needed for overhauling the gearbox, so I have been having a little play.
Back to this Bentley........won't be long..........
-
You also need new copper washers although these may come with the filter.
-
All being well and if I've done it right, you should find all the info you need to download the Mk2 Golf and Jetta GTI (incl 16V) Bentley workshop manual here:-
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richandhazel1/golfgti/links/bentley.html
Don't blame me if it doesn't work for you.........worked fine for me ;)
-
Oh and some where along the line, you'll need to key in a code. Have a look in the 'readme' text. I'll give you a clue, it starts 3Q.......... ;D
-
cool i'll give it ago ;D
-
bugger the work fire wall or proxy jobbie is blocking my access, can you keep you page uploaded till i get home pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease ;D
-
That'll stay there for a while now.........no worries.
I posted it once before, quite a while ago. Some people managed to get it to work, other had trouble, hence the detailed instructions.
Hope it works for you..........I think one of the main issues was that you musn't try and install it without having first burnt it onto CDROM, you have to burn it on to CD first.
Any of you more computer literate guys out there want to have a go and offer some advice..........feel free, I only work these things out by trail and error.
-
do you have to download all of them first? not just the one?
-
yeah this bentley thing for free sounds good?? i need it for a mk2 kjet 8v, and a mk4 1.8 20v do they do it for mk4s yet rich???? ;D
-

I would imagine so, can't see how it would work otherwise as you need to burn it to CD-ROM. The instructions are just the way I did it......if anyone more pc literate wishes to add anything, feel free ;D

Haven't seen it for the Mk4.......I'll just have a quick check on 'overnet', back in a mo.
-
will have a play when ive got time!!!! no broadband here will take ages to down load!!, as im not fluent in russian do i select all of them things or 1 at a time???
-
I can only download 2 at a time, I think its something to do with my default settings on XP. I just downloaded 2 and when they finished moved onto the next 2.
